White - Sparkling
N.V. Hush Heath Estate Balfour 1503 United Kingdom, England, Kent

Clear, pale golden, youthful color. Medium mousseux. Light, fruity style with quite high dosage. Not much autolytic notes. Clean fruit, soft, not much complexity. Crowd pleaser for easy drinking. Short-medium finish. Will not benefit from ageing, made to drink now. My first sparkler from Kent 😊 86-87

White
2019 Fritz Haag Riesling Trocken Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
89 points
Tasted blind. Clear, pale golden color. Clean, medium intense, a bit reductive nose with some signs of spontaneous fermentation. Floral, peach, gooseberry, mineral notes. Very interesting. Thought young Chardonnay at first 😊
On the palate dry, nice medium+ acidity, 12% abv. Nice pressure and grip, good depth. Still obviously young with some lime and red berries. Good length. So nice to see what it is. Can’t comprehend the 94 PP, but this is certainly one of the best PQR for German Estate Riesling in 2019! 88-89+

White
2004 Dr. Bürklin-Wolf Forster Kirchenstück Riesling Germany, Pfalz
97 points
Tasted blind. Clear, pale, youthful golden color. Clean, pronounced nose that did not match the youthful color. This wine has some age. Lots of chalky notes, clean, yellow stone fruit, some petrol. This is soo deep, woven and complex! Stunning nose!
On the palate simply: Wow! Pressure, grip and energy, but in a very elegant and perfectly balanced way! This is really awesome. Fine yellow fruit, great mineral core, creamy, beautiful texture. The only thing that surprised me is the slight sweetness, that I have never experienced before in this wine. It is not disturbing, but unusual. Anyway, the finish is very long. This bottle was not even at its full peak, and could even improve a bit over the course of the next years. Such a great experience! 96-97

Flight 4 (1 note)

White
2019 Wittmann Westhofener Morstein Riesling Großes Gewächs Germany, Rheinhessen
Tasted blind. Popped and poured. Clear, pale, youthful golden color. Clean, youthful nose, quite closed. Lots of citrus and lime, some mineral notes. Unbalanced and nervous.
On the palate as well nervous and unbalanced, also a bit closed. All components are there: high acidity, salty mineral core, fruit, but it makes no fun to me right now.
So surprised to see that it is Wittmann’s Morstein. Did not detect the typical Morstein “darkness” in this wine. Only 12,5% abv. Well, I will not open my bottles until 2029 and this wine will certainly improve until then 😊

White
2012 Alzinger Riesling Smaragd Loibenberg Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau
90 points
Tasted blind. Popped and poured. Clear, pale yellow color. Clean, medium intense, developing nose with some fruity apricot and a mineral core. Thoughts of Austria and Kamptal came into my mind.
On the palate lean, straight, quite salty, some residual sugar, extract, some apricot and slight petrol notes. Lacks a bit of pressure and power. Medium+, salty finish. Potential for another 5+ years. 90-91

White
2009 Weingut Keller Abts E® Riesling Großes Gewächs Germany, Rheinhessen
95 points
Bottle popped and poured. Clear, pale golden color. Clean, medium+ intense, developing nose. Very precise, cool, lots of wet stone, herbs, some sweet pineapple. Can one smell energy? Amazing.
On the palate its is not so much about the flavors of fruit, great mineral core and the like. It’s about an amazing, electrifying tension! This wine is so deep and dense, has so much extract and tension and a laser like precision. Very long and lingering. It is not even close to its peak. No hurry drinking it. Pretty consistent to my last bottles. 95-96

Red
1991 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
95 points
Bottle popped and poured. Clear, deep purple color. Clean, pronounced, developing nose with lots of fine red fruit, oak, mineral notes. Not yet with much tobacco and leather, rather youthful, but sexy, dense and complex.
Great pressure on the palate. Fine red fruit, salty, great acidity, that masked the 14% abv perfectly. Fine, high tannin. Silky, velvet texture. Beautiful elegance and balance, lots of grip and density. Unfortunately, it still feels young and not yet on its full peak. Needs 5+ years. Very long already.
95+

Tasted blind. Decanted for about 1-2h. Clear, deep purple-garnet color. Clean, medium intense, developing nose with some speck, slight menthol, oak, fine spices, dark red fruit, some green pepper. Dense.
On the palate very deep. High, a bit harsh tannin. Red fruit, some green pepper, medium+ acidity. A bit rough and green. Long, lingering finish. 92-93.

Red
1985 Château Cos d'Estournel France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
92 points
Tasted blind. Clear, deep garnet color. Clean nose with some lovage, fine oak, tobacco and leather. On the palate high acidity, lots of dark fruit, tannin is a bit rough. Wine still seems youthful. Finish is medium-long. Lacks a bit of depth and complexity for a great Bordeaux, but it is great to see, how this wine can age. 92-93

Flight 10 (1 note)

Red
1997 Antinori Solaia Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
95 points
Tasted blind. Clear, deep ruby color. Clean, pronounced and developing nose. Lots of speck, beautiful, clean fruit, some cigarbox. Deep and beautiful.
On the palate great density and pressure. Beautiful balance of silky tannin and high acidity. Great, clear fruit, lots of black currant. Very precise and elegant. Long and lingering finish. Still very young and potential for at least another decade. 94-95+

Perfect bottle. Clear, medium golden color. Clean, medium+ intense, developing nose: Lots of yellow stone fruit, vanilla crescent, mineral core. Lovely and dense.
On the palate medium-sweet, good balance of sugar and acidity. Beautiful balance and harmony, very round. Long, soft finish with lots of fruit and vanilla. Potential for another decade. 91-92
