Single vineyard above a church. 50yo vines, south-facing, 70 degree slope.

Honeysuckle on the nose, and a promise of something exotic - obviously not austere or particularly mineral - so stereotypically 2018. Lots of energy on the palate, with exotic fruit, mint leaves and a limey core. Charming and welcoming.

Also very steep, SE facing, sunny, windy and exposed - quite an intense site. Slightly brown/blue/red tinges to the slatey soil.

Petrol and blackcurrant leaf on the nose, which comes across pretty ripe. Tghter and more mineral on the palate, with green mango. Slightly faint on the saline finish, but long and moreish. Warmth and air don't make the wine at all flabby, but give rise to a strawberry and cream sweetness. Delicious!

Uhlen is a single hill, on a curve of the Mosel, S and W facing. This section is grey slate - gives roundness, creaminess and mouth-filling minerality. All the Uhlen plots have vines that are on average 55yo.

A little bit of spritz. Very classic Riesling. Peachy nose, gamey flavour, and a real melange of fruit coming through. Quite a tight, stony finish.

Red slate in this section of the vineyard. This gives depth, impact and seriousness.

More of a shining gold than the prior, paler wines. Wow! What a huge petrol-accented nose - so aromatic. Big on the palate, caraway-spiced, and fans out and fills the mouth with bittersweetness, and a lovely water-like finish. Lots of presence, but refreshing as well. Excellent

White - Off-dry
2010 Weingut Heymann-Löwenstein Winninger Röttgen Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Sweet wines are only produced by the estate when the grapes justify the extra work - and in 2010 the botrytis grapes had good acidity.

Just dreamy - buttercream, cheesecake. Some apricot, smoke, butter - viscous and oily. Icing sugar and passion fruit on the finish. Really delicious.

My first time trying this estate's wines, and very impressed, especially with the Roth Lay - have now gone out and purchased a few vintages.
