Flight 1 (15 notes)

Red
2001 Domaine Jean Grivot Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
90 points
Attractive nose with lots of earth, mulled spices and dried fruits. The fruit is leaner on the palate with structure (dusty tannin, elevated acidity) pronounced. Time to drink up.

2006 Domaine Jean Grivot Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Plenty or ripe black cherry in the aroma and palate. Structure is significant, drying and not in harmony with the fruit. This seems disjointed and too ripe to ever come together. Drink up.

2010 Domaine Jean Grivot Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
93 points
09/10 single blind. Rich, spice-filled aromas are Vosne-like with modest oak accents. Palate is smooth and bright with intense florals and spice. Approachable, concentrated fruit that is engaging and fresh. Great now and should improve over 5-10 years. Quite clearly the 2010 given it's total completeness and approachability.

2009 Domaine Jean Grivot Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
91 points
09/10 single blind. The richer and riper of the pair with more earthiness in the aromas. Full bodied and not subtle with fairly strict structure. More brooding and should improve with upside from here in 5-10 years.

2001 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
90 points
Fully mature Burgundy with lots of earth and funk laced in the mature black fruit. Good concentration and balance. From a more rustic era at the Domaine.

2012 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
96 points
Intense and broad aromas of violets and spice with black cherries. The palate shows great power with impeccable balance and restraint. Silky. Layers of Vosne-inspired complexity. Delicious and engaging now — should hold in this peak form for 10-15 years.

11/13 single blind pair. Herbal notes throughout the sweet black cherry aromas. Bright and juicy with lighter bodied but not lean fruit. Providing plenty of pleasure (especially for an '11). At peak now. Clear to recognize as an '11.

2013 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

11/13 single blind pair. Intense and attractive black cherry aromas is made complex with spice, florals and sweet earth. Terrific richness and concentration. So delicious and layered. Just a touch less seamless and polished as the 2012 in the same flight.

1990 Domaine Jacques Prieur Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

90/05 pair. Gorgeous, complex aromatics of ripe mature black cherry with lots of dried spices, dried herbs and florals. Lovely layering. The palate has similar flavors, just not quite as delineated and comes across as less interesting flavor-wise though still quite balanced with rich, mature fruit and acid freshness. In a good spot and should hold.

90/05 pair. A brooding and unready wine. Lots of youthful, powerful rich black cherry and not much else at this stage. Hold for another 10 years.
Red
2002 Gros Frère et Sœur Clos Vougeot Musigni France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Forward and generous nose of smoky, floral, spicy black fruit. Palate is rich and generous with flavors similar to the nose. Fruity and fun if not the most complex.

2004 Gros Frère et Sœur Clos Vougeot Musigni France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

A successful 2004 with fruit that is still reasonably fresh, though this is still lean and compact.

Good fruit and spice though this is still brooding with little subtlety and lots of gritty tannin. Perhaps this has upside as it settles in, but I'm not optimistic based on the producer's 02 and 04 tasted side by side.

2001 Gérard Raphet Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Fairly tired earthy fruit that comes across as dirty. Time to drink up.

2010 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Vougeot 1er Cru Les Petits Vougeots France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vougeot 1er Cru

Attractive, lifted and intriguing aromas black cherry, spice and musk. Fleshy, rich fruit that has plenty of brightness throughout. A complete and ready wine. More ready than a bottle from a year ago which I suspect is a function of cork variability in this vintage at H-N.
