Introduction

The distributor had a fun mix of Barthod, Carillon, and a little Lignier as a capper. Lets f'ing drink them! Lets get the Rosenthal rep to divulge some insider info and walk us through it.

Flight 1 - Jacques Carillon PM Perrieres Mini-Vertical (2 notes)

A wine considered one of the best values by Burgundy insiders this showed that it needs time to really show how special it is. Very reticent I wouldn't dream of opening these before age 10 or more.

White
2014 Domaine Jacques Carillon Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Perrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
White fruit, floral, nose is still very reticent, white rock, strong bitter phenolics, broader on the palate, strong acid with mineral up front and fruit later; needs lots of time to open up as this saw roughly 4 hours of air.
White
2016 Domaine Jacques Carillon Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Perrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
More reduction on the nose than the 2014, lime zest, matchstick, flinty, nose is more effusive, very focused, strong acids, sweeter fruit, sappy dry extract, showing beautiful balance; while everything is very nice everything points to a strong trajectory upwards and time will prove its brilliance.

Flight 2 - Barthod Chambolle Premier Crus Flight 1 (3 notes)

Red
2013 Domaine Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Véroilles France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
Of the Chambolle 1ers in this flight this shows more ripeness, cedar, almost stewiness to the fruit, wilted rose, maraschino cherry, mushroom, a bit clumsy in comparison, some citrus on the palate, more power but a bit 1-D.

Red
2013 Domaine Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Aux Beaux Bruns France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
Lovely fruit, strawberry and cherry, high toned, very fine structure, lacy, sexy, truffle of sorts, good mid palate richness, very complex and showing well now but signals greater potential, effusive and sweet floral finish.
Red
2013 Domaine Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Baudes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
Darker red cherry, something reminds me of Nebbiolo here, sexy plum, rose petals, broad on the nose, structured acids, fruit is more shy, sweet and sour cherry and strawberry, a bit top heavy today but good acid for a bit more mid term cellaring.

Flight 3 - Barthod Chambolle Premier Crus Flight 2 (3 notes)

We almost covered all of the 1er Cru vineyards. I would have liked to have had the village, Cras, and Gruenchers but such is life.

Red
2013 Domaine Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Chatelots France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
More mushroom evident on the nose, darker, sweet liqueured strawberry and cherry, plum and cherry, very nice wine just outclassed in this flight.
Red
2013 Domaine Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
Youthful, mushroom, sexy sweet strawberry, juicy and high toned, citrus, plum, elegant, refined, sexy and wiry with good fat; this should age really well.
Red
2013 Domaine Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuées France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
Dense, darker earth, muscular, somewhat shy nose, tobacco, black cherry, muscular yet a delicacy to it, powerful, grand cru density; so good.

Flight 4 - Hubert Lignier Charmes Chambertin Mini-Vertical (2 notes)

Why not? A brilliant idea on paper for a proper crescendo but like our first flight this is a wine that needs lots of time to reveal their brilliance.

Red
2013 Hubert Lignier Charmes-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Violets, plush, sexy, high toned, leaps out of the glass with spice and a mix of floral, sweet red and dark fruit, still so young, super fine tannin, juicy acid while being incredibly sappy; gorgeous.
Red
2014 Hubert Lignier Charmes-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Plush ripe cherry and strawberry with an orange zest quality, very fine tannin, mix of red but more dark fruit enters, lots of drive and acid here; needs time.

Closing

Really educational. These are producers of serious integrity and transparency. The stuff for true Burgundy fans who are thoughtful and patient. Wish I could taste lineups like this every year to see them at different stages. Looking back and in the moment I always say I need more of these wines in my cellar. While the price is fairly high they give such an honest and skillful representation of what makes Burgundy so unique and reignites passion for the region. These guys don't make Volnay that tastes like Gevrey.
