Heidi's Gang: Back in Saddle Again

The Kenwood, Mpls, MN

Tasted May 11, 2021 by rocknroller with 182 views

Introduction

This was another big milestone getting the Heidi's Gang back together after a 15 month layoff. Six of us ((KB, SS, CV, DD, BE, JS) gathered at the Kenwood to enjoy some splendid wines and savor the offerings of "new" chef/owner Joel DiBilzan. The Kenwood has been a staple over the years and the transition from Don to Joel looks to be a seamless transition much to everyone's delight. All of the wines tonight drank with well with both notable whites and reds. Thanks to everyone for sharing some spectacular wines!

Flight 1 - Champagne Flight (2 notes)

White - Sparkling
2008 Champagne Pierre Legras Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs "Idée de Voyage" France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
92 points
Light gold color. Drank a glass over an hour plus. I thought this was drinking really well tonight. First bottle I've had and it bodes well. Sea air, toast, apple, bread dough, stone on the nose. The palate has tons of dry extract and clean chalk driven minerality. 92+(+)pts.
White - Sparkling
1996 Salon Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne
95 points
Medium plus deep golden color. Drank a glass over an hour. When someone says that a Champagne is vinous, this what they mean. Ripe golden apple and pear, wet stones, round yet crisp, voluminous on the palate with layer uppn layer of density and minerality. Very elegant for the depth and intensity. Showing more maturity and some oxidative charater; there's lots of lemon oil and almond extract on the long mineral laden finish.

Flight 2 - Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru Flight (3 notes)

White
2007 Etienne Sauzet Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
96 points
Bright medium plus gold color. PNP, drank a glass plus over 2 hours plus. Tonight was real treat with a trio of Batard's: '07 Sauzet, '14 Ramonet, & '14 Pernot. All of these wines show the immense power and depth one might expect. The finely aged complexity of the richly honeyed '07 Sauzet makes it stand apart from the youngsters. Yet the brilliant energy and freshness of the 14's are undeniable. Pick your poison and die a glorious death. The Sauzet is a mature beauty showcasing what happens when these manage to go the distance. Beautiful and enticing on the nose with honey, fennel seed, tarragon, deep lemon, golden apple, butterscotch, and stone. The multilayered luxurious palate is full bodied with an oily, honeyed texture. Combed honey, shaved and lightly toasted hazelnuts, lemon oil, citrus zest, ripe apple, buttered apple tarts and great minerality on a long generous finish.
White
2014 Jean-Claude Ramonet Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
95 points
Medium minus gold color. Yet the contrast of youth, elegance and energy is a thing of beauty here, and the uber classy Ramonet shines brightly. There's still a dose of oak that needs to fold fully into the mix, but the architecture is there for this to evolve even further. This was a little bit fatter to start too, but over 30 minutes or more, this kicks it up couple of gears and hits the pedal, becoming more balanced and minerally with cut stone and loads of bright citrus, ripe apple and cream this cuts loose and engulfs most of the oak in the process. Clearly this has a lot head space left. 95(+)pts.
White
2014 Paul Pernot et ses Fils Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

I love the classic nose of citrus, hazelnut, Meyer lemon, and orange zest and steely ocean minerals. The palate is chiseled and vibrant capturing everything the nose promises. This has fantastic acid; so crisp and taut with lemon curd, Meyer lemon, clementine, and stellar mineral definition. Long and lifted on the finish. Loved it.

Flight 3 - Red Burg Flight One (1 note)

Red
2004 Domaine Leroy Bourgogne France, Burgundy, Bourgogne
94 points
Medium murky red color with a clear 3mm margin. PNP, drank a glass plus over 2.5 hours. Wow, this is just an unreal bottle. It seems like there are so few chances for something like this even happening. But these Leroy's have that potential to so shine above their pay grade. The '04's have simply been glorious. This was a head turning, stunningly good bottle that was only matched tonight by an equally impressive '08 Bouchard Chambertin-Clos De Beze among a trio of Grand Cru's. What a perfume; swampy, damp and earthy, filled with truffles and moss, leather, cherry, blood orange, and high toned dried roses. I wrote, unf$%^g real. The palate is an amazing array of cherry, leather, sour cherry, deeply earthy with floral tones all around, so bright, so lively, sublime. Holy S$%t. I loved this. 94+ to 95pts.

Flight 4 - Red Burg Flight Two (2 notes)

Red
2008 Bouchard Père et Fils Chambertin-Clos de Bèze France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
94 points
Medium red plus color. See Chablis28's notes for detailed prep, but this got a healthy decant. Drank a glass over 90 minutes. Drinking great this is really detailed on the nose and palate. Distinct roses, perfumed, amazingly high toned aromatics, soil graphite, and exotic spice notes on the nose. The palate has depth and power, with grace and finesse, lively, damp, red fruits, the soil and minerality is great, well defined tannins, nicely astringent and well defined spices.
