Introduction

Every tasting with Loek has surprises; this one too.

Flight 1 (7 notes)

White - Sparkling
2007 Raumland MonRose Grande Cuvée Extra Brut Germany, Rheinhessen
92 points
Lots of fruit in the start of the taste; the acidity is a bit higher than in champagne. The wine is very pure and the aftertaste is very elegant, but has a limited length.
White
2012 Domaine Roulot Meursault Les Meix Chavaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
95 points
Superb fruit, lovely wood, but not fully integrated; my first impression Corton-Charlemagne or top-Puligny; however it was in between. The fruit is more prominent than the wood, but the real power of this wine is in the aftertaste with layers on layers of fruit, glycerine and white fruit combined with lovely bitters.
White
2016 Clos Mogador Priorat Nelin Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
94 points
A real surprise, beautifully dosed wood and mint, with a tad higher acidity than usual, like a grillo, white fruit, juicy and with a long and mineral (and still a bit minty) aftertaste, refined, concentrated and balanced.
White
2013 Franz Hirtzberger Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Honivogl Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau
95 points
Not a punishment to taste this wine; Loek adores the wines of this producer and he has right. Spicy, slightly minty, a roussanne like smoothness, concentrated and always with modesty (noblesse oblige); refined till the end.
Red
2009 Clos Rougeard (Foucault) Saumur-Champigny Les Poyeux France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur-Champigny
94 points
My first encounter with Clos Rougeard and a good one, starting shy and a bit fragrant, so i thought the wine was older than '09. With aeration however the wine grew; some cherries, recognizable cabernet franc, but not Bordeaux (more freshness in the backbone), a hint of mint, soft peppers, lovely balance and the aftertaste grew with more air.
With this determination, although never tasted before, I guessed...Clos Rougeard.
White - Fortified
1961 Clos Désirée Muscat de Rivesaltes France, Languedoc Roussillon, Roussillon, Muscat de Rivesaltes
93 points
Very elegant bouquet, soft spices, friendly acidity, light red and transparant colour with a bit brown at the edge, modestly dosed wood, modest sweetness and elegant citrus. The balanced aftertaste is quite long and surprisingly fresh. This wine did not show its age.
White - Fortified
1870 Eschenauer Fine Champagne Cognac France, Cognac, Fine Champagne Cognac
97 points
After we had tasted this wine again (2 years after the previous glass) the bottle was empty!! Compared to my previous note the wine had grown with more aeration, elegant wood, eucalyptus, spicy, perfect tannins and an eternal aftertaste; 96 points and one for being still so refined.

Closing

The Clos Mogador Nelin '16 was the surprise for me.
The Clos Désirée '61 came from my cellar.
