M&PD Zoom Tasting

Tasted January 13, 2021 by Brolawa with 52 views

Flight 1 (6 notes)

We tasted the following wines blind:

White
2012 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Blanc France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
97 points
This wine is exquisite. While cold had a glycerine nose that warmed into honey, nuts and spice with a whiff of petrol. All of the above also on the palate and finish, with some mineral and salt.

1983 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
95 points
This wine was light in color and had a beautiful smokey nose. It still had fruit on the nose but not as much as a younger Chave. The same on the palate: The fruit died quickly with the earth and tannins winning out and cutting the finish short. Don't get me wrong, this was a beautiful wine; it just didn't taste like Chave to me. I knew from the tasting parameters that I was tasting a Northern Rhone, but without that I might have guessed an old Chambertin.

1998 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
94 points
This wine is excellent, but just a touch less exotic than the '83 Hermitage. It didn't have as much smoke and earth - but it had a more fruit and a longer finish. Actually tasted more like Chave, but could it possibly be too young?

1995 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Turque France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
95 points
This bottle's cork had a runner up the side which I was concerned foreshadowed damage to the bottle. However, I believe everything was intact bc this was an excellent wine, just not as incredible as the '99. It actually smelled quite young for the vintage. Black fruit and oak mix beautifully with an earthy, wild-tasting musky, bloody taste. Viognier layers in floral notes. A sophisticated freight train.

1999 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Turque France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

This wine was the star of the three Turques. Just a beautiful wine with all of the notes in perfect balance. Fruit, floral and feral all come together to just sing. Hard to find this mix anyplace else. It's a heavy wine, but it is so nicely balanced and structured.

2003 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Turque France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

This is a great wine, but my least favorite of the Turques on this night. Some green notes which made me wonder if it was too young. Eric thought it may be characteristic of the vintage where the vines shut down early (see note below). This had nice floral and fruit notes, but less exotic than the others. The feral/blood was almost non-existent here, which I feel makes this wine so unique. Still fantastic wine.
