Rhone / Barossa Comparisons
London
Tasted June 19, 2021 by SixHedgehogs with 73 views
Introduction
Thought it would be interesting to compare a Châteauneuf with a GSM Barossa wine from a similar vintage, and a Hermitage with a 100% Barossa shiraz. All wines were excellently different.
Flight 1 - Champagne (2 notes)
White - Sparkling
N.V. Eric Rodez Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Noirs Brut
92 points
Fizzy red currants and some funky rancid orange fruit. Superb.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Gosset Champagne Brut Grande Réserve
92 points
Really good. Like flowery lemon sherbets. But bone dry. Fine bubbles.
Flight 2 - White Burgundy (2 notes)
White
2002 Domaine Jean-Marc Pillot Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot
flawed
Golden-yellow, aroma of straw and lemon. Lovely butter and lemon flavour, but nuttiness now becoming rancid and oxidised after a few minutes. Might be an off bottle.
White
2017 Domaine Jean Goulley Chablis 1er Cru Fourchaume
92 points
Golden, apples aroma. Rich, flinty, mature, but refreshing. Spicy hint of ginger.
Flight 3 - GSM (2 notes)
Red
1999 Les Cailloux (Lucien et André Brunel) Châteauneuf-du-Pape
94 points
Red brown. Complex aroma of earth, pine, violets. Then warm spicy berry flavour. Rich fruitcake aftertaste. Really delicious. Drinking well now.
Red
2002 Charles Melton Nine Popes
94 points
Black red. Much thicker texture than the preceding Chateauneuf. Woody aroma, hint of roses and tar. Huge rich fruit flavour, treacle, raspberry, blackberry. Powerful stuff.
Flight 4 - Syrah (2 notes)
Red
1994 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle
95 points
Black red colour, aroma of blackberry jam. Initially austere, but opens in the glass with glorious blackberry fruit, spicy and rich with complex layers of oak and cherry liqueur. Not decanted, but bottle opened for two hours in advance. Delicious.
Red
1994 Peter Lehmann Shiraz Stonewell
97 points
Dark red. Spicy aroma. Really bright cherry fruit, luscious texture, but with a lightness and delicate touch of acidity. Mellow, earthy, spicy aftertastes. Exquisitely balanced. Interesting to taste after a 94 Hermitage. This was the lighter wine. Not decanted, but bottle opened for two hours in advance.

Flight 5 - Something to go with blue cheese (1 note)
White - Sweet/Dessert
1990 Château Broustet
90 points
Bright yellow-gold. Aroma of peaches and pineapple. Some medicinal notes. Lovely fruit compote flavours of orange, peach and pineapple. Tang of balancing bitterness in the background. Drank well over a week without losing anything. Really good.
