Casually tasting eight samples with my wife (double-blind)

Introduction

A friend (and wine merchant) rang at my door in the afternoon and dropped off eight samples prepared by him from bottles he had tasted for his program the day before (and I gave him samples of wines my wife and I drank over the weekend in return). This is becoming a COVID-tradition for us. My wife and I tasted the samples in the evening, before dinner, with dinner, and thereafter (double-blind).

Flight 1 (8 notes)

White
2020 Post House Sauvignon Blanc Mailing May South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch

Sample 1 of 8, prepared by a friend and dropped off at my door spontaneously, tasted double-blind. Light lemon colour. Nose is fresh, floral, and candy- and urinal cake-like. Citrus, underripe kumquat, roasted almond, nettle, and mint, with good acidity and a buttery texture. A little weak in the middle, followed by building greenness and bitterness on the finish. Slightly disjointed. Needs food. I guessed Sauvignon Blanc, potentially from the Loire Valley.

2020 Post House Chenin Blanc Cameo South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch

Sample 2 of 8, prepared by a friend and dropped off at my door spontaneously, tasted double-blind. The nose is more reserved and not nearly as artificial as the nose of the previous wine. Citrus, pear, hints of red berries, light herbal and light vegetal notes, light smoke, and mild spice, with medium-level acidity and average length. Medium- to full-bodied and well-balanced. Drinks well. Might pair well with sushi.
White
2020 Cantina del Nebbiolo Roero Arneis Bricco Lagotto Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Roero

Sample 3 of 8, prepared by a friend and dropped off at my door spontaneously, tasted double-blind. Light lemon colour. Light floral notes, stone fruit, peach, ripe apple, and an ice bonbon (menthe glaciale) component, with medium-level acidity and average length. Tastes artificial. Seems to have a touch of residual sugar. Finishes flabby and sugary. Bland. Not a fan.

Sample 4 of 8, prepared by a friend and dropped off at my door spontaneously, tasted double-blind. Citrus, herbal notes, smoke, light spice, and well-integrated oak, with lively acidity and very good length. Buttery texture. Good concentration and complexity. Reminds me of the Diemersdal MM Louw Sauvignon Blanc 2018 we drank the other day. I liked it.

Sample 5 of 8, prepared by a friend and dropped off at my door spontaneously, tasted double-blind. Light salmon colour. Red fruit notes, citrus, lightly herbaceous, and light spice, with good acidity and good length. The complexity is limited, but the wine is well-balanced and drinks quite well.

Sample 6 of 8, prepared by a friend and dropped off at my door spontaneously, tasted double-blind. Stone fruit, ripe pear, citrus, light honey, light spice, and some smoke, with medium-level acidity and good length. Good body and concentration. Well-balanced. Paired very well with a mild curry. Should also pair very well with Sushi. 89+

Sample 7 of 8, prepared by a friend and dropped off at my door spontaneously, tasted double-blind. Dark ruby, almost purple colour. Some reduction on the nose. Red and dark fruit, spices, herbaceous notes, and smoke (smoked mackerel?), with lively acidity, well-integrated tannin and good length. Medium-bodied, and well-balanced, with solid concentration, and average complexity. Quite drinkable despite of its apparent youth.
Red
2015 Château de Lastours Corbières Simone Descamps France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Corbières

Sample 8 of 8, prepared by a friend and dropped off at my door spontaneously, tasted double-blind. Dark ruby colour. Dark fruit, herbaceous notes, a hint of chocolate and some smoke, with good, lively acidity, notable tannin, and very good length. Less accessible but more structured than the prior wine, with better concentration. Possesses good energy. Can be enjoyed now if you don't mind the tannin, but should benefit from a few years in the cellar. 89 for mid-term potential.

Closing

Now this is why tasting wines double-blind is so much fun! And kudos to the wine makers. I was thinking Loire Valley more often than not, which speaks to the skillful winemaking and quality of these mostly inexpensive wines!
