Flight 1 (14 notes)

Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Ruinart Champagne Brut Rosé France, Champagne
88 points
A bright Rosé with Chardonnay-driven character and lift. Good enough weight, good brightness throughout.
White
2011 Domaine Michel Lafarge Meursault Vendanges Sélectionnées France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
90 points
Lean apple, pear and lemon with some savory herbs and anise. Bright from beginning to end with good weight, better length.
White
2010 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
90 points
Ripe and plentiful orchard fruit with baked apple and almond butter notes throughout. Very classically Meursault. Holding very well, even with its modest level of perceived acidity. Best to enjoy over the next few years.
Red
2016 Domaine Michel Lafarge Bourgogne France, Burgundy, Bourgogne
88 points
Red cherry and berry with some black cherry hints. Slightly sweet spice in the middle. Very good balance and overall fun. Very good for its level right now.
Red
2014 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay Vendanges Sélectionnées France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay
90 points
Floral and slightly spiced with red cherry, all coming across as prototypically Volnay. Very good density for its level, if blind we all would have thought this 1er Cru. Restrained start, opened up with 15-20 minutes in the glass. Great value wine. Better 2024-2034.
Red
2009 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay
89 points
Mature red cherry throughout, aging beautifully and gracefully. Slightly musty start, this cleaned up nicely with 20 minutes in the glass. Nicely floral, nicely spiced, another wine that perfectly represents its terroir
Red
1995 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay 1er Cru Clos du Château des Ducs France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
91 points
In 95/03/07/09/11 vertical. Mostly mature red cherry and berry with perfectly integrated tannins, which isn't common for many 1995s. Some charming herbaceous notes are a fun nuance. Good weight and length.

2003 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay 1er Cru Clos du Château des Ducs France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
flawed
In 95/03/07/09/11 vertical. Too advanced, too ripe with pronounced volatile acidity
Red
2007 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay 1er Cru Clos du Château des Ducs France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
93 points
In 95/03/07/09/11 vertical. Fresh and dried red fruit with savory spice and floral background notes. So charming with classic Volnay features, good+ length and good weight.

2009 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay 1er Cru Clos du Château des Ducs France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
94 points
In 95/03/07/09/11 vertical. Lots of ripe black and red cherry with plenty of power, well supported by robust tannins in the near background. Perhaps not as perfectly harmonious as the 2007, this is bigger, denser and more attention-grabbing. Group was split between this vs 2007 as wine of the flight, but I prefer this 2009 for its potential.

2011 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay 1er Cru Clos du Château des Ducs France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

In 95/03/07/09/11. Fresh and dried red cherry with dried thyme and flora hints. Not a powerhouse, but wonderfully bright and energetic without any of the bitterness too common in the vintage.

2011 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Tasted alongside the 2011 Clos du Château des Ducs from the previous flight. This Clos des Chênes was bigger, more harmonious and more complete, even wit a similar flavor and aromatic profile. Very good now. I have typically preferred Clos des Chênes over Clos du Château des Ducs until the most recent few vintages, and these 2011s were consistent with that view.

2002 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
flawed
First of two bottles was opened 3-4+ hours before tasting and given a quick double decant. It came across as stewed when served.

Second of two bottles, this was popped-and-poured as a replacement for the tired/ stewed bottle, and this replacement was glorious. While this initially seemed on the mature side for 2002, it combined fresh fruit with slowly cooked/ reduced mushroom in wonderful combination with braised meat spice character. Some air was beneficial here, as the wine freshened up after 10-20 minutes in glass, and seemed to put on good weight. This is a wine that I've sadly experienced several damaged bottles through the years, but tonight's great bottle was the best I have ever tasted.
