Introduction

Sunday night and it was time to cook again.

Flight 1 (1 note)

Started off with some Grüner while I was cooking.

White
2006 Hiedler Grüner Veltliner Thal Austria, Niederösterreich, Kamptal
Oh baby, quite youthful, very rich, faintly honeyed and a little hint of sweetness, faint notions of apricot in the background. Moves into deliciously peppery and spicy flavors with good mineral under-current.

Flight 2 (2 notes)

Dinner was roast chicken with Herbs de la Garrigue; a farro salad with fresh apples, roasted vegetables and fresh Italian parsley; and braised kale with balsamic and apples. The Burgundy improved with the dish. The Beaucastel was tired but ultimately more drinkable.

Red
2000 Carré-Courbin Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Cave des Ducs France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Wonderful nose. Hints of smoky peat and flowers. I was excited. Alas, the palate is pretty dilute, big dropoff from the nose. Fairly present acidity, and this was at its best alongside roast chicken. I tried it on pop and pour and then followed in the glass for several hours. While it fleshed out a bit it never really picked up the weight I hoped for to make this any more than a good effort.
Red
1985 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
A bit of an oxidized note with some soy on the nose. The palate is a little tired but still hanging on, ripe, black fruited, tarry, very round and mature, very nice texture. Not a great bottle but pleasing enough.
