Vérité Decanter Series Tasting - Yummy!

Tasted January 24, 2022 - January 27, 2022 by I'd Rather Be Drinking Wine with 125 views

Introduction

This was a tasting set up through Decanter. I was anxious to taste these wines because I have never had Verite wines before....I really enjoyed the 18's a lot! However, if the 2008s are any indication of how long these wines need to age, I will be dead when the 18s are truly ready to drink! On the other hand, they are pretty darn good now, and even the 2008s, although not peeking yet, are still drinking pretty well, especially La Muse and Le Desire. I may need to get one or two of the 18's because I think they will be special.

Flight 1 - 2018s (3 notes)

2018 Vérité La Muse USA, California, Sonoma County
Wow...very impressive! Part of a Decanter series tasting kit in 100 ml bottles.

Nose showed lots of chocolates covered cherries, mocha and some sweet black fruit with hints of spice. Palate showed plenty of structure with layers of dark cherry, cocoa, and hints of cedar, spice, earth and tobacco. Later, it added notes of dark fruit and sweet oak. Delicious! Would rate in the mid 90s, but will improve with time in the cellar. This would be difficult not to open early, as it is pretty darn good now! (95+ if rating today, but will definitely get better!)

Wow...very impressive! Part of a Decanter series tasting kit in 100 ml bottles.

Nose showed lots of plum, baking spices and some blue fruit coupled with sweet toasted oak. Palate showed lots of structure (even more than La Muse) with layers of dark fruit, earth and wood, with hints of graphite and toasted oak. Later, there were notes of herbs and spice. Very nice wine that is drinking well now, but will undoubtedly improve with some time in the cellar! 95+ to 96 today, but will get better....not sure if this will be better than La Muse, but it should be close!

2018 Vérité Le Désir USA, California, Sonoma County
Wow...very impressive! Part of a Decanter series tasting kit in 100 ml bottles.

Nose showed lots of purple flowers, especially lavender, with a little barnyard funk (in a good Cabernet Franc kind of way) and lots of red fruit and spice with a hint of earthiness.

Palate shows lots of structure (I am really loving the 2018 vintage), and agree with Decanting Queen's notes, except I didn't get quite the green notes she described, but did get some additional notes of earth and new leather and a hint of tobacco. Excellent now, but as DQ stated, will get even better. I would rate this 96 if drinking now, but should add additional complexity and points with some cellar time (7-10 years).

Part of a Decanter series tasting kit in 100 ml bottles.

Nose showed plum and violets with some woody notes and hints of tar. Palate showed dark fruit, leather and spice, with notes of earth tobacco and oak. This was the least evolved of the three 2008's and will definitely improve with more time. tannins still have some course edges and secondary flavors are fighting fruit, rather than being in harmony. Still, a lovely wine even now, but will get better with another 5-10 years in the bottle. I would call this wine an awkward teenager, but one that shows lots of potential and flashes of brilliance. 94 today, will improve with additional cellar age.

Nose showed cherry blossom and blueberry with cocoa and cedar notes. Palate showed dark chocolate covered cherry with mocha notes, tar notes and hints of well-integrated toasted oak. Tannins are more polished than the 2018, and there is some secondary/tertiary flavors emerging, but this wine still has a ways to go before truly showing its full splendor. I would agree with Decanting Queen that this will improve through at least 2028. Very well built wines! 96 today, and could improve a point or two down the road (I suspect it will). IMO, this is drinking the best of the group right now.

Nose was perfumed with some slight barnyard funk (in a good/interesting way) with red fruit, some earthy notes and a little bramble. Palate was not quite on par with the nose, but still showed plenty of red fruit (mostly currant), with leather, earth and cigar notes, coupled with hints of spice and toasted oak. I think, like the Jolie, this needs more time to fully come together.Pleasant enough now (in fact, pretty tasty), but you can tell it is capable of much more, and at the price point, you want to drink this when it is peeking for your palate. Personally, I like a nice balance between fruit and tertiary goodness, with smooth tannins and some acidity. I think this wine is capable of delivering that with some additional time. 95 today, but should pick up points with additional cellar time. I would give it at least 5 more years, and perhaps longer.

Was very happy to try these wines and, even with my high expectations, they did not disappoint! Excellent wines, just wish they were more affordable! Cheers!!!
