Couples Night at Joe's with Anything Goes!

Tasted February 3, 2022 by I'd Rather Be Drinking Wine with 146 views

Introduction

This was going to be our regular Guys Night Out, but due to cancelations we were down to three of us, and Joe volunteered to host the event and we opened it up to the women. Everyone brought their spouse, except me, I brought my niece who was planning on helping cook the meal if I was hosting. Glad she came with us, because we brought a birth wine for her, and it turned out to be WOTN! Joe and Khem did a fantastic job hosting and with the meal....and a great time, with great food and great wine, was had by all!

Flight 1 - Champagne (2 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Champagne Le Mesnil Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

Very nice Blanc de Blanc! Nose showed toast, apple and hints of citrus and sea breeze. Palate showed lots of brioche, pear, tart apple and toasty oak notes with hints of spice. A very nice starter Champagne! 91+ with no problem!
White - Sparkling

Nose showed toast, citrus and oyster shell. Palate showed lots of red fruit (strawberry and raspberry) brioche, tart apple, and hints of sea shell, gravel and citrus. A nice drinking Champagne that managed to stay interesting throughout the glass. Drinking well now, but no hurry. 93+ points.

Flight 2 - White (1 note)

White
2007 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
94 points
Very nice Chablis, and while I truly enjoyed it, I can say it is over-priced for my palate. Certainly interesting and intellectual, with the nose showing sea breeze, white flowers, white pepper, citrus, and chalk. The palate showed lots of lemon oil, chalk and Meyers lemon, with some creamy pear and hints of spice, coupled with a very viscous mouthfeel and a family long finish. Enough acidity to keep the fruit lively, but I expected it to be more acidic (not complaining, because over-acidity is not exactly in my wheelhouse, but it was what I expected. A solid 94+, and certainly not worth $300+ to me, but others may disagree.I have one more bottle and will likely be opening it more sooner than later.

Flight 3 - Reds (4 notes)

Red
1994 Araujo Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Eisele Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley

PnP - One of my niece's attended a wine dinner with me, so we picked out a birth year wine for her....this one. It was superb! Nose showed Eucalyptus, violets, plum, blackberry, a slight funk (in a good way), and some cedar and spice notes, with some air, it also added some forest floor and dried wood notes. The nose was so fragrant and compelling, I hesitated to take a drink because I was in fear of a let down. Alas, the palate was equal to the task, showing dark fruit, leather and bramble notes followed by notes of mint and herbs, coupled with hints of toasty oak and tar. Everyone's WOTN! 96+ for me, and that may be conservative! Wish I had more of this one!

Okay...I rarely open a bottle this young, but given the reviews, I had to try one early, and I get it....This wine is a hedonistic wine lover's wet dream (excuse the crudeness), and I was admittedly seduced by the big, ripe fruit, the creamy texture and even an intellectual component of trying to identify flavors. However, I also corked about a third of the bottle and put it in my refrigerator until the next night. The fruit had mellowed and some secondary flavors emerged (although the fruit still dominated the palate.

Initially, blackberry vanilla and cranberry dominated the nose, with blackberry pie, creme de cassis, vanilla ice cream and some pie crust and meaty notes were lurking in the background. Later in the evening, the nose also picked up a little funk like wet hay or grass, but not enough to put off the wine or the nose. The finish was all dark fruit with hints of toasty oak and cocoa. After the initial fruit, there was a long taste that I couldn't quite identify (maybe some bacon fat or blood), it was interesting and kept me sipping the wine.

The next night, fruit had mellowed, but was still dominated by dark fruit, but there were also noted of leather and tobacco, with some brambly notes and some spice too. I loved this wine on the PnP, but I liked it even better with substantial air, so I will likely wait a few years to open the rest of my bottles, but would not fault anyone for drinking these sooner than later. 96+ today, but I think this will get even better!

PnP - Very nice Bordeaux blend from S.A. (Chile). Mostly Cabernet and Carmenere, with a little Cab Franc, Merlot and Syrah. This is their flagship wine. Nice floral nose featuring red and black fruit, some purple flower, with hints of earth and cedar. Palate was silky with smooth tannins and enough acidity to keep the fruit lively, which consisted of lots of red fruit, including current and cranberry, with some spice, bramble and tar notes. Very nice red that offers a pretty good QPR! 93+ to 94 points. I don't know how much this will improve, but should at least hold here for a while. Drinking quite well right now!

2001 Masi Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Campolongo di Torbe Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico

Nose showed slight raisin notes with plenty of dark cherry, woodsy notes and dried herbs, with some air, it also showed some damp forest floor. The palate was rich, with plenty of dark fruit, and cocoa. A hint if raisin, but much fainter than what I was expecting. Palate also showed plum, black pepper and some spice with fine grained tannins and enough acidity to keep the fruit lively.

Some Amerones are pruny and raisiny, almost to the point of being a desert wine....this was not one of those! This was drinking like a normal red wine with very little sweetness (although the raisins were there, but faint)....it was a perfect food wine, rather than an after dinner wine. Drinking quite well now! 93+ to 94 points. I do not see this improving further, but no hurry to drink what you have. Nice QPR!

Flight 4 - Dessert (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
2006 Sine Qua Non Marsanne Mr. K The Straw Man USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Ynez Valley
95 points
PnP - The nose showed lots of apricot and orange notes with some honeysuckle. Palate showed lots of orange marmalade, apricot and some Christmas spice, with hints of marshmallow, vanilla, creamsicle and other spices lurking in the background. What really made this wine stand out was the full unctuous mouthfeel and the uncanny balance of sweetness and acidity that made the wine not too sweet, nor too acidic. In a great place right now, and based on my limited experience, it should at least hold here for a few more years with no issue. 95+ and a great way to end a great night!

As a side note, my niece, who is not a fan of sweet wine, even liked this wine!

Closing

You know a night went well when you totally lose track of time, and that is what we all did! The food, wine and conversation were flowing effortlessly, and before we knew it it was very late! (Sorry Joe!) I can say, I had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed everything! This is why you have these events! Thanks to all who attended, and "Cheers" to those reading my story!
