Introduction

A very nicely done dinner at Spiaggia, including the ladies so Janet came along.

Flight 1 - Various delicious crostini (1 note)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Charles Heidsieck Champagne Brut Réserve Mis en Cave 1996 France, Champagne
94 points
Really surprisinly good for what is really a NV wine. Lovely fruit, good tart acidity, and great energy, along with some notes of complexity without giving way to oxidative notes.

Flight 2 - Vitello tonnato (veal tounge carpaccio) (1 note)

White
2006 Ceretto Langhe Arneis Blangé Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC
88 points
Forward nose of yellow fruit and ahint of ammonic acidity. bright electric peach fruit on the palate. Nice enough but surely nothing special.

Flight 3 - Gamberi con fagiolini e coriandolo (spot prawns) (1 note)

White
1994 Château de Fieuzal Blanc France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
88 points
Full yellow color. Big nose of caramel yellow fruit with some spice and butterscotch. A bit sour but big evolved yellow fruit on the palate. Clearly at or near the end of it's window - drink up!

Flight 4 - Ravioli di ricotta con piselli (1 note)

Red
1990 Conti Costanti Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Deep purple color. ripe black fruit with earth and some spice. Nice big black cherry and licorice.

Flight 5 - Manzo al fornao con proscuitto e parmigiano reggiano (1 note)

Red
1996 Luigi Pira Barolo Marenca Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
94 points
Full opaque black red color. Dusty prune black fruit on the nose - nice, classic. Nice round rich black fruit with a touch of sweetnenss and some earth. A lovely barolo drinking in the front end of the window. 94-95 pts.

Flight 6 - Selezione di formaggi (1 note)

Red
1992 Ridge Monte Bello USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains
95 points
Wow, I thought the barolo would be the easy WOTN and I did not expect this to show nearly so well. Full deep black purple color. Spactacular nose of cassis and spicy candied red fruit. Nice rich sweet black fruit on the palate with pencil lead and good acidity. Drinking at its peak, I would guess. Delicious.

Flight 7 - Panna cotta al cioccollata (1 note)

Red - Fortified
1983 Cockburn Porto Vintage Portugal, Douro, Porto
flawed
We've had an ongoing problem with corkiness in this wine and it continued here. Badly corked.
