Open THAT Bottle!

Introduction

Another successful gathering filled with good food, good wine and great friends! So much fun to drink and evaluate a wine with a nice pour (or several pours) and in a setting where only one wine is on display and not in a "competition" or being evaluated against its peers!

Flight 1 - Champagne (1 note)

White - Sparkling
2006 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne
97 points
This was probably the best bottle I have had of this wine! Always outstanding, but this bottle seemed more layered and more focused than previous bottles, plus more of everything I like about Champagne. Not sure if it comes from additional age or slight bottle variation, but my guess is the latter.

Nose: Toasted brioche and sweet tropical fruit dominated with slight sea breeze and hints of chalkiness.

Palate: The palate showed a kaleidoscope of flavors, with butter toasted brioche, followed by melon, pear, and green apple, then some oyster and sea shell, finishing with tropical notes of mango, papaya and pineapple. This was a real joy to drink!

I have never been disappointed with the 2006 Comte, and my expectations are always high, but this bottle managed to surpass my lofty expectations! 96+ to 97....down to my last few bottles, how sad!

Flight 2 - Starter White (2 notes)

White
2008 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Knock on wood, I have been very fortunate with this wine, and have yet to purchase/open an oxidized wine from them. This bottle was drinking quite well, and offers an excellent QPR, IMO.

Nose: Showed lemon, sea shell, white flowers

Palate: Lemon oil, bees wax, saline and almonds....a viscous wine with a nice mouthfeel, delicious taste and a medium-long finish.

I was very worried reading all the reviews mentioning premox...but this was my second bottle this month, and I am happy to report that both bottles were in great shape! 93 to 93+ easily!

Flight 3 - Feature Red (1 note)

Red
N.V. Lillian Winery Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain

This was a unicorn wine (how often do you see an expensive NV Cabernet?) First time trying one of these and felt right in my wheelhouse. Seems my experience with this wine differs than people's more recent experiences. My one gripe is that apparently Maggie made a 2010-11, and a 2013-14...and no way that I am aware of to differentiate the bottles. Which ever this was, it was drinking great!

Nose: The nose showed plenty of perfumed flowers (violets rose petal and lilac) with lots of cherry notes and some spice.

Palate: Exploded with red fruit, dark and tart cherries, some beef blood and hints of anise, chocolate and toast. Tannins were smooth and silky, enough acidity to give the fruit a little liveliness! A very enjoyable Cabernet that held up well all night, and even evolved some with some darker fruits coming through more toward the end of the night.

I really enjoyed this wine. 93+ to 94 for my palate!

Closing

This was a fun tasting and all the wines were excellent (with the exception of one premox wine)....knock on wood though that we have had the good fortune of rarely encountering bad bottles! Always nice to sit back, relax and enjoy some nice wines! Cheers!
