Bernie's Birthday Bash

Jason's House

Tasted June 3, 2022 by I'd Rather Be Drinking Wine with 96 views

Introduction

My brother-in-laws birthday. He came down from Duluth to celebrate with us. We prepared an unbelievable meal (Orzo pasta salad, twice baked potato, and Akashi filet mignon with a sherry raisin sauce, and a chocolate cake for dessert! Paired the Grenache with the filet and the port with the dessert! Both pairs were great!

Flight 1 - Main course (1 note)

Red
2012 Two Hands Grenache Aerope Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
95 points
PnP - This was singing right out of the gate! Hedonistic fruit with velvety tannins...delicious!

Nose: Lots of florals and red fruit! Hints of bramble and cigar.

Palate: Gobs of red and black fruit, black raspberry pie, with hints of smoked meat, blood and iodine lurking. No heat, velvety tannins and enough acidity to keep the fruit lively. This is mouth-coating wine that finishes medium long leaving behind sweet fruit with well integrated toasty oak and hints of meat and spice.

Always a pleasure! Drinking quite well now! 94+ to 95 points....I am discovering I really love the taste and value of a nice Grenache!

Flight 2 - Dessert (1 note)

Red - Fortified
2011 Graham Porto Vintage Portugal, Douro, Porto
94 points
PnP from split (.375) - Still drinking quite well.....probably needs more time to fully develop secondary flavors, but extremely pleasant and hedonistic now!

Nose - Perfumed scents of lilac, cherry and chocolate, with hints of tar and anise.

Palate - Chocolate covered cherries dominate, with some spice, bramble, tobacco and licorice notes. Paired nicely with a decadent chocolate cake!

I love this port, and am thoroughly enjoy it young. The fruit overwhelms the alcohol, which makes it a very pleasant drinking experience in my book! If you enjoy hedonistic wines, feel free to pop one open (they are still very reasonably priced), or if you prefer a more complex and tertiary flavor profile, hold for another 20 years. :) 94+ yet again!

An enjoyable evening with my brother in law and his wife! My wife and enjoyed the company, the food and the wine...and that is what it's all about!
Cheers!
