Rosé Masterclass

Tasted July 21, 2022 by Heynetty with 86 views

Introduction

This class was well led by Walden Premantle at the Texas Wine School. Very informative.

I do not like still rosé and so I wasn't expecting a lot from this tasting but hoped I might be challenged.

Many attendees debated the finer points of which rosé should be consumed by a pool and whether it was an all day or certain time of day drink. I smiled, this isn't me at all. Still not gotten to the drinking wine at music festivals and beaches yet. Too hot for all that!

Flight 1 - Classic Styles (5 notes)

Yawned my way through this lot

Rosé
2018 Château de Peyrassol Côtes de Provence Le Clos Peyrassol France, Provence, Côtes de Provence
A: Pale gold....odd for a rosé
N: Medium (+) nose fo apple skin , woody pear, yeast, squashed raspberry. Honestly, I thought this was a flat champagne at first.
P: Dry, medium acidity, medium alcohol, low tannin, medium body, medium (+) intensity, medium finish
40% CINSAULT
30% GRENACHE and TIBOUREN
6 months on the lees and made using the direct press method hence pallor.
Its a good quality Wine. Lacks complexity and needs a lengthier finish
Rosé
2021 Château de Trinquevedel Tavel France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Tavel
A: Very pale ruby
N: Medium raspberry, candied cherry (the candied nature is indicative of the the cool fermentation), watermelon and tarragon (Walden).
P: Dry, medium acidity, medium alcohol, medium intensity and medium finish. Bitterness remains on the palate.
C: Fairly dull for me. Its not complex, intense or long. Its balanced between RS and acid and its acceptable quality. Tavel should be better than this.
60% grenache and Syrah whilst the remainder is clairette, consult, bourboulenc.
12-48 hrs maceration. Cool 20 day fermentation.
Rosé
2020 Leone de Castris Five Roses Salento IGT Italy, Puglia, Salento IGT
A: Pale pink-orange
N: Medium (-) nose fo orange rind, strawberry, mild. dandelion , dried herbs
P: Dry, medium acidity, medium alcohol, medium intensity, low tannin, medium finish.
This is what I loathe about rosés. Waste of calories. Barely acceptable quality. Blah! Balance of fruit and acid at least.

Not suitable for ageing.
Rosé
2020 Domaine Pascal Cotat Sancerre Chavignol Rosé France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre
A: Palish pink-orange
N: Medium (+) nose of smoke, strawberries (candy), lemon drops. Simple.
P: Dry, high acidity, low tannin, high alcohol, medium body, medium (+) intensity and medium (+) finish. Apparently, direct press method
Simple and good quality .
Its not suited to ageing.
Rosé
2015 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Rosé de Pinot Noir France, Burgundy, Bourgogne
A: Very pale orange
N: Pronounced intensity of rotting broccoli and cucumber, cheese
P: Dry, high avid, medium alcohol, pronounced intensity, medium (-) body and short finish.
Disaster! Unpleasant so out of balance, great intensity , simple and short finish. Its barely acceptable. Its past its best. Yuk!
Not suitable for ageing (or drinking)

Flight 2 - Tete de Cuvees (3 notes)

Rosé
2017 Château Vannières Bandol Rosé France, Provence, Bandol
A:Pale orange with a drop of pink
N: Pronounced nose of vanilla, cinnamon, leaked apple, baked peach, thyme
P: Dry, medium (+) acidity, medium alcohol, medium body, pronounced intensity and medium (+) finish
Beautiful acidity and ripeness balance. Superb intensity and good finish. You can tell the complexity is starting to form but despite this being matured under flor yeast, I am not getting any notes from that. Its very good quality and suitable for ageing.

60% Mourvèdre, 20% grenache, 20% cinsault. 6 months of ageing on stainless steel and aiming for 30 years of age worthiness.
Rosé
2018 Château Miraval Côtes de Provence Rosé Muse de Miraval France, Provence, Côtes de Provence
A: Medium gold with pink edges
N: Medium smoke, physalis, tobacco leaf, cooked peach, baking spice
P: Dry, medium (-) acid which is curious, medium al, medium (+) intensity medium body, medium (+) intensity and finish
THis has good concentration but I can't understand why the acid is so low. It feels out of balance. Intensity and length are contributing well to this good quality wine but better balance and complexity needed to increase the stature of this little beauty. The Perrins know what they are doing.
Not suitable for ageing if my acid call is correct.

Grenache dominant blend with Rolle. Direct Press. Up to a year of ageing in Demi mid and concrete egg
Rosé
2019 Château d'Esclans Côtes de Provence Garrus France, Provence, Côtes de Provence
A: Pale gold with pink hues
N: Medium (+) nose of baking spice, cooked lemon and.......hey where is the rest of it?
Dry, medium (+) acid, medium alcohol (perceived), pronounced intensity, medium (+) body and medium (+) finish. $121/bottle
Nose and flavors are dumb. Its a good quality wine but ultra simple flavors and the acid spiriting away the few that are there.

Grenache, Rolle, Syrah.

Whole cluster pressed with 90% free run juice, fermentation and 10 months of ageing in first and second use Demi-muid. Battonage twice a day. All these efforts and I just can't detect them at all.

Disappointed.

Flight 3 - Beyond the Barrel - winemaking in action (4 notes)

Rosé
2011 R. López de Heredia Rioja Rosado Gran Reserva Viña Tondonia Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
92 points

N: Pronounced intensity of sweet tobacco, dried strawberry, dried and fresh blood orange, acetaldehyde (roast nuts and oyster mushroom), little furniture polish, clove
Dry,high acidity, medium (-) tannin, medium alcohol, medium (+) body, very creamy texture, pronounced intensity and long finish
Outstanding quality wine. Well defined, balanced ideal intensity and length with superb complexity. THis is suitable for ageing.

Absolute treat! Best Rosé that I have ever tasted. Unique among rosados.

Rosé
2015 Clos Cibonne Tibouren Côtes de Provence Cuvée Spéciale des Vignettes France, Provence, Côtes de Provence
A: Pale orangey
N: Medium (+) nose of orange, strawberry, apple skin (red), yellow flowers, pomegranate, yeast and a little roast nut
Dry, medium (+) acidity medium alcohol, medium body, medium (+) intensity, low tannin, medium (+) intensity and finish
C: This has a good concentration and finish for a rosé. Its refreshing with good balanced concentration. Its not complex but isn't built for that. To be enjoyed while its youthful. Its a very good quality wine.
This is atypical as it is aged under flor like a biologically aged sherry, However, one can barely perceive the flor.Id prefer if it added more to the wine. $59/bottle
Rosé
2020 Château Simone Palette Rosé France, Provence, Palette
A: Pale ruby
N: Medium (+) nose of raspberry. cherry drops, rosemary, lavender
P: Dry, high acid, medium alcohol, medium (-) tannin, medium body, medium (+) intensity and finish
NORTH facing vineyards to decrease intensity of sun and heat exposure deep in the south of France.
Its very good quality wine. $60/bottle. Not the best QPR

Rosé
2019 Château Le Puy Rose-Marie France, Vin de France
A: Pale RUby
N: Medium (+) nose of red plum, red candied cherry, strawberry, lemon green leaf ? ( not bell pepper, anyway). orange zest
P: Off dry ( lots of free run juice in this which adds to the price and the sweetness as a lot of sugar will come out in the free run juice), high alcohol, high acid, medium (-) tannin, full body, medium finish...the sugar hangs on and not the flavors.
The acid is balanced the sugar. The intensity is good but the complexity and finish is somewhat lacking. Good quality wine

Flight 4 - New Trends in Rosé (3 notes)

Rosé
2020 von Winning Pinot Noir Rosé Germany, Pfalz
A: Pale Pink
N: Medium (+) nose of smoke, barnyard, candied strawberry, raspberry, lemon rind
P: Off dry, high acid, medium alcohol, medium (+) intensity, medium (-) body, medium finish
Such an interesting rose. I really like it and its only $25/bottle
Its a good quality wine but needs a longer finish and more complexity for a higher rating.
Rosé
2021 Lady of the Sunshine Pinot Noir Rosé USA, California, Central Coast, Edna Valley
A: Pale pink
N:Medium nose of oranges, raspberries. Simple.
P: Dry, high acidity, medium alcohol, medium intensity, low tannin, medium (-) body, medium finish.
This is acceptable quality. Its flavoured water.Several attendees said you don't need to bother thinking while drinking this and it would be good by the pool. No idea. I don't hang out by pools.
Orange
N.V. Domaine Binner Si Rose France, Vin de France
A: Cloudy pale pink
N: Pronounced nose of gardenia, rose, jasmine, VA, lychee, yeast, anise, clove, orange zest
Dry, medium tannin, medium (+) acid, medium alcohol, pronounced intensity and long finish.
Its an outstanding wine but its not a rosé as its made of pink rather than red grapes. Its an ORANGE wine and one which I like very much. A half step away from rancid always makes these wines really nervy.

'Si Rose" is a pun. sounds like the French word for sclerosis apparently.

Closing

Do I still dislike rosé? Largely, YES.

The Vina Tondonia was a triumph but it was one I expected and was glad not to be disappointed. The German pinot was lovely and the orange wine, a treat.

angeliina jolie and brad Pitts top tier Miraval was interesting but not worth the price tag at $200/magnum however it had more concentration and length than most.

Very good tasting. No surprises here.
