Anhelo (Phoenix)

Introduction

Went to an Agelus tasting at Anhelo in Phoenix, AZ! Great food and great wines, and connected to some old friends from the night before and a few new friends! Everything was outstanding....food, wine people!

Flight 2 - A couple of wines post-Angelus (7 notes)

Red
2018 Le Carillon de l'Angélus France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion
90 points
This second wine of Angelus comes from a designated vineyard with younger vines (15-20 yrs old). It is a very nice wine and certainly should be consumed earlier than Angelus (I think 5 - 7 years). Very fruit forward and nice mouthfeel. Will undoubtably gain some tertiary goodness after 5 yrs of bottle age, but certainly drinkable now. Nose is better than the palate at this point, but both are very nice.

Nose shows violets and dark fruit with hints of cedar and spice. Palate is hedonistic with lots of dark fruit, some anise, cigar and spice, but it is the fruit front and center. A hedonistic wine that should please lots of people, even non wine drinkers. A solid 90 points.

Slightly better than the 2018, but that is likely because of the extra age. Drank a small pour over the course of 2 hours. Still fruit forward and leaning on the hedonistic side. Nose shows floral notes and blackberry and cassis, with hints of cedar and spice. Palate follows suit with black fruit, violets and graphite, and hints of sweet oak. A nice wine. 90+ to 91.

2010 Château Angélus France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Drinking very young, but still delicious! Kept getting better with more air. For me, this wine is still too young, although drinking pretty well now. This has so much more potential to improve with more time in the cellar....great now, but will be a rock star in another decade.

Nose shows flowers and fruit with some cedar, spice and hints of earth and tobacco. Palate is fabulous, but still fruit dominant....also shows cigar box, sweet tobacco, some coffee and vanilla bean, and some sweet toasty oak. 95 today, but oodles of upside potential!

I liked the 2010 better, but not by much. Surprisingly, this was more ready than the 2010, but didn't quite have the intensity of 2010. Nice mouthfeel, no heat and smooth tannins are the earmarks of this wine. Drinking well now, but will certainly get better with additional age! 94 today with a huge upside.

My favorite of the tasting, and if I was younger, I would buy this wine! It will certainly be a stunning wine when it matures. The fruit is decadent, the tannins smooth, but present, and acidity seems good....everything you want for a great wine!

Nose is typical Angelus (dark fruit and perfumed), and the palate showed dark fruit compote with some earth, graphite and sweet oak....it will certainly be a stunner, and IMO, the best of the three tonight.slightly better than 2010, and much better than 2015. 95+ tonight and may gain a point or 2 with time!

1998 Château Margaux France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

PnP - Unfortunately, this wine suffered from not getting enough air....a 1-2 hour decant would have helped immensely, IMO. The nose on this was phenomenal and intoxicating! I could have sat with this wine smelling it all day and quite content. Unfortunately, the palate didn't live up to the nose. Perhaps more air would have helped as this wine did improve throughout drinking it over 30 mins. Nose was perfumed, with lots of fruit, earth and purple lilac, with hints of mushroom, tar, leather and anise, as well as tobacco and toasted oak. Palate showed more tertiary flavors initially, with bramble and earth dominating, followed by graphite, tobacco and oak, with some black and red fruit. With some air, the fruit really emerged, but remained in the background. I think the fruit would have made its way to the forefront with more time. 96 nose and 92 palate for a 94.

I thought this was better than the 1998 Margaux drank along side, but still way too young. Nose wasn't as good as Margaux, but palate showed more fruit and greater depth. Unfortunately, the finish was rather short. I suspect this needed more air. Still quite delicious, but you just know it capable of much more. Give this another 5 years, and it should open up more. 94+ now, but so much more potential!
