Flight 1 (2 notes)

Red
2005 Domaine de Rochepertuis Cornas France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
Lovely classic cornas. Good acidity, iron filings, a bit of earthiness there but not too much. Bracing rather than thrilling - in the zone now but I think it has a decade or more ahead of it.
Red
2001 La Rioja Alta Rioja Viña Ardanza Reserva Especial Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
From half - hadn't planned to open it but we were enjoying the previous bottle so much we just felt like an extra glass. Double decanted and quickly chilled. Just lovely - the balance of the fruit, the still present American oak and the acidity works perfectly. Of course they have decades ahead of them but there's no shame in drinking something which gives such pleasure now.
