Slightly funky nose, clearly of a relatively natty disposition, but still well within mainstream (especially since I can only imagine how terrible natty nebbiolo could be). Slightly high-toned, but without too much volatility; quite earthy and not as fruit-forward on the palate, showing tons of tannin. An interesting wine now, and my guess is not one for aging too much, as it doesn't seem to have the fruit for really long-haul aging.

L. 9.125. A little more advanced than I would have expected for a 2006 (and I am certain of the very good provenance and storage of this bottle). The fruit feels like it is browning more than expected here, and there's a little bit of volatility as well. Moderate tannins, this is probably reach a pretty good drinking window. Of course, I've had old normale bottlings of 30+ years, so I'm sure good bottles of this will run the distance.

1998 La Rioja Alta Rioja Gran Reserva 890 Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
90 points
Distinctively LRA with a very intense dill note on the palate. The nose comes off more leathery than anything else, and I would have liked to have a little more fruit and polish there. The palate has an intense green dill note with a slight creaminess that evokes a sour cream dip. Otherwise, this is quite refined and resolved, and drinking very nicely now, though given the track record of aging for LRA, I'm sure this will be plenty fine many decades from now too.

2017 Nervi-Conterno Gattinara Italy, Piedmont, Northern Piedmont, Gattinara

Absolutely lovely. Crystalline red fruit on the nose; clean and bright with plenty of chewy, young tannins and delicious acids to complement the fruit. Not too complex, but definitely a brilliant exposition of nebbiolo at an entry level price. Great to drink now while this is still as young as it is, even if this may not have the full structure to reach old bones.
