Introduction

This was a bring a bottle event and one thing we learned is good Aussie wines age. The 2004's were the stars of the show.

Flight 1 (17 notes)

Red
2019 Palliser Estate Pinot Noir New Zealand, North Island, Wairarapa, Martinborough
75 points
Might be one of the worst Pinot Noir's of the year. Light is an understatement. Floral, dirt and mild fruit. Short finish. Not flawed just a terrible wine. Even the people bringing it said it was terrible and not cheap as it was $30.

Rosé
2021 Orin Swift China Doll USA, California, Napa Valley
88 points
Might be the best Orin Swift wine tasted to date. Strawberry, dark cherries, spice and floral notes. This was a nice Rose style wine. Not sure what it costs and it is not Tavel but very enjoyable.
White
2012 Jamsheed Riesling Great Western Garden Gully Australia, Victoria, Western Victoria, Great Western
90 points
Thinking this would be a dry Riesling but going German on this and I liked it. Floral, peach, honey, ginger and mild spice. Medium plus finish. Drinking well now and consume within the next few years.
Red
2011 Clarendon Hills Cabernet Sauvignon Sandown Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, Clarendon
92 points
The Napa version of this wine tonight. Many thought it needed more time which tells you this is not a flawed bottle as one reviewer previously thought. Plum, dark berries, spice, earth, mild oak and tobacco. Medium plus finish. Did not decant this and probably needed a few hours.
Red
2018 Snake + Herring Cannonball Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
91 points
Interesting wine and I liked it. Spice, eucalyptus, dirt, light fruits and floral notes. This had a nice overall finish. Solid wine and glad I tried it.
Red
2016 Mollydooker Cabernet Sauvignon Gigglepot Australia, South Australia
89 points
Compared to the 11 Sandown this is amazing it costs twice the price. I would drink this but nothing off the charts. Bigger style with plum, cherry, blackberries, spice and pepper. I don't see this aging long term so drink now.
Red
2004 Oliverhill Winery Shiraz Jimmy Section Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale
94 points
So those who say good Aussie wines don't age are not drinking the right Aussie wines. $45 with shipping this is off the charts good. Blackberries, black pepper, tar, spice, blueberries and minerals. This is concentrated and showing great form. Pop and pour and should age another 5 years. Buying all they have left. 3rd time trying this wine and this is the best version.
Red
2004 Shirvington Shiraz Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale
93 points
A half a point behind the Jimmy tonight. 2nd best wine at the tasting. Eucalyptus, dark fruits, spice, earth, underbrush and dark chocolate. Medium plus finish. This has 5 or more years left of pure enjoyment.
Red
2013 Penfolds Shiraz St. Henri Australia, South Australia
92 points
Showed ok tonight. Decanted 3 hours. Probably needs to sit in the cellar for 5 to 10 years at this stage. Pepper, blue currants, mild spice, earth and floral notes. Complex wine but not competing with the 04's tonight.
Red
2013 Two Hands Shiraz Angels Share Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale
91 points
This is what I call a crowd pleaser in a good way. Bright fruit, floral, earth and pepper. Medium finish. No rough edges and smooth overall wine. Many liked it.
Red
2017 Henry's Drive Shiraz Magnus Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Padthaway
86 points
3 in a row that I did not like at all. This wine was heavy on the eucalyptus and offered little fruit. Some earth and mild spices. Kind of a flat wine. Drink now.
Red
2016 Davey Family Wines Shiraz D Block Reserve Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale
83 points
A total wine bust. This wine offered some heat, big fruit and acidity levels are lacking. One dimensional wine and not cheap.
Red
2018 Davey Family Wines Shiraz D Block Reserve Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale
87 points
A bit better than the 16 but not my cup of tea. Mild heat, blackberries, spices and earth. Not very complex. I can think of 100 Aussie wines that cost less that are better.
Red
2018 Shaw and Smith Shiraz Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Adelaide Hills
91 points
For less than the D Block wines this is far superior. Cooler climate Shiraz with floral, white pepper, minerals and earth. Medium finish and balance wine.
Red
2018 Mollydooker Shiraz Carnival of Love Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale
90 points
This is fine but the price is outrageous for this quality. Big wine with blackberries, ripe plums, pepper and spices. In your face effort that I will be happy to drink but would never pay $70 for this. Far better wines out there.

2014 Henschke Keyneton Euphonium Australia, South Australia, Barossa
88 points
Not showing well on this tonight which is a theme for every other user on this wine. Light effort with light structure. Light fruits, earth, heavy floral notes and mild spices. Lacks complexity. Drinkable but nothing amazing.

2014 Barossa Valley Estate Shiraz E & E Black Pepper Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

Nice showing tonight and if anything young. Black pepper, black fruits, coffee beans, spice and earth. Medium plus finish. Solid aging potential.
