Introduction

Theme of same grapes in each flight but with differences. Performed blind, the question was could we spot them!

Flight 1 - Flight 1 Dry vs Medium Dry Riesling (2 notes)

Everyone got it. A minority liked the spatslese and the dry Alsace was one that grew on people.

White
2006 Cave De Beblenheim Riesling Grafenreben France, Alsace
Grew on some. Riesling confirmed as a difficult one for people to like, me included.

Flight 2 - Flight 2 Oaked vs Unoaked Chardonnay (2 notes)

Again, quite easy and everybody got which was which. Surprisingly people felt the Cahblis was thin.

White
2006 Joseph Drouhin Rully 1er Cru Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte Chalonnaise, Rully 1er Cru
Good structure and round fruit. Very popular, was WOTN from the whites with 9/14 votes.
White
2006 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis France, Burgundy, Chablis
Taste with the Rully, seemed thin. Surprisingly unpopular for such a classic.

Flight 3 - Flight 3 Mature vs Young Ozzie Shiraz (2 notes)

The most difficult. Wines were same colour, with very little browning. The 1994 was surprisingly young and vigorous. After a time though, differences became more obvious.

Red
1994 Houghton Shiraz Show Reserve Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Frankland River
Tasted with the Lehman Barossa 2005. Did not taste like a 14 year old wine. Mixed reviews around the table.
Red
2005 Peter Lehmann Shiraz Barossa Australia, South Australia, Barossa
Lots of people liked the immediacy of this wine.

Flight 4 - Flight 4 New World vs Old World Cabernet Sauvignon / Merlot (2 notes)

Everybody got it, but were split over which they liked best. Some liked the fruit, some not.

Red
2005 Château Liversan France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc
Liked by everyone, thought to be pretty serious, obvious tannin relative to other wines of the night. Pencil shavings. My WOTN
Red
2004 Cape Mentelle Cabernet Merlot Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
Blackcurrant and mint. Lots felt great to drink on its own. Half preferred this over the claret.

Flight 5 - Flight 5 Cheaper vs More Expensive Sangiovese (2 notes)

Everybodies favourite flight by a long way. The dryest and least fruity wines of the night too.

Red
2000 Castello Banfi Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
WOTN for 4 people. Everybody liked it very much. But not sure about the price.
Red
2003 Castello Banfi Chianti Classico Riserva Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
Drank with the Brunello. These two were the best two reds of the night by popular vote. WOTN for five people.
