Introduction

First time I've organized an event, I found some value wines to teach my fraternity brothers a little about wine.

Flight 1 (3 notes)

White
2006 Matua Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough
87 points
Lemon & lime with definite cut grass & a slight touch of green pepper nose. Good citrus that eventually shows a nice lime note that lingers pretty well and a touch of acid.
White
2006 Nik Weis / St. Urbans-Hof Riesling QbA Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
86 points
Light nose with some floral notes & white fruits with possibly peach? Mouth of nice citrus (think mango & pinkish fruits) flavors, a smooth mouthfeel and some fruit that lingers & shows nicely through the evident sweetness. Very good, one that I believe would do best on its own and not with food.
White
2006 Souverain Chardonnay Alexander Valley USA, California, Sonoma County, Alexander Valley
83 points
I'd call it "good." Some scents of old red apples and peach notes here. Not a whole lot on the attack but a little fruit, then a finish that has a slight tinge of buttered cracker, small touch of acid, and just a little fruit. Palate is somewhat muted but shows decent texture.

Flight 2 (5 notes)

Red
2006 Di Majo Norante Sangiovese Terre degli Osci IGT Italy, Molise, Terre degli Osci IGT
89 points
Was really impressed with this. Pruney, meaty nose leads to a slightly muted front end, but some fruit comes up and goes into a nice dry finish that shows some smoke and some of that meaty hint.
Red
2006 Woop Woop Shiraz Australia
86 points
A fruity, cherry nose. Has a fruity attack and decent end grip on a pretty nice finish. Touch of something like spice that occasionally shows up adds a bit of interest.
Red
2005 Columbia Crest Merlot Grand Estates USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
87 points
A plummy, almost jammy nose with a touch of wood there too. Light front end with some dark berry notes that goes to a finish of decent length with a smoky, almost charcoal essence.
Red
2005 Ravenswood Zinfandel Lodi USA, California, Central Valley, Lodi
85 points
Red fruits on the nose and some sort of natural touch...like strawberry leaves or something. Good strawberries, a touch of spice and nice texture. A fairly crisp finish, shows light tannins and good acid.
Red
2005 Montes Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon Chile, Rapel Valley, Colchagua Valley
89 points
Some obvious mint and smashed blackberries on the nose. Attacks with nice dark fruit and ends with a smoky note that is accompanied by nice tannins & acid that's well in balance.
