Flight 1 - Greg's sausage roll (1 note)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Egly-Ouriet Champagne Grand Cru VP France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
Light golden colour. Red apple peel and French bakery notes on the nose. Round and supple texture delivering citric complexity with good mid-palate energy and impressive length. There's a real sense of harmony, class and overall balance. Oct 2019 disgorged.

Flight 2 - Scallop sashimi with new season rhubarb (2 notes)

White
2017 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Hommage à Marguerite France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Aubin 1er Cru
Very pale yellow. Smoke on the nose which reminds me of charred wood. Fortunately this wine is so much better than the off putting olfactory impression. There is a classy and refined mouthfeel with a subtle interplay between white and yellow fruits although it is certainly not fruity. Upon later revisits it completely opens up and there is serious persistence. Impressive.

2012 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Meursault 1er Cru Charmes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Encouragingly pale for a decade aged white Burgundy. Still a little smokey on the nose, there's decent mid-palate weight and a richer slightly creamy texture. There's energy, the wine is expansive and really fans out. Not especially fruity. V. impressive.

Flight 3 - Ham hock raviolo, onion and garlic veoute, whole grain mustard (4 notes)

Red
2007 Domaine Fourrier Vougeot 1er Cru Les Petits Vougeots Vieille Vigne France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vougeot 1er Cru
Colour quite dark and possibly appears more evolved than expected. Hedonistic gamey nose with some forest floor and balsamic notes - quite a statement. The midpalate shows round tannins with good concentration and length, sufficient freshness and well judged acidity. Red fruited with evolution in the glass as the wines open up to show slightly decaying wild raspberries and other forest floor notes. There's a real personality to this wine and lovely balance. It easily held its own well in an esteemed flight. Should drink well for many years to come.
Red
2001 Domaine Dujac Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
Darker red in colour showing evolution as one would expect. Really sensual nose showing forest floor and wild berry notes. Light to medium bodied with gentle tannins and wave after wave of delicious red fruit delivered with plenty of freshness. Not the most complex yet very complete and just perfect with fine cuisine. For those lucky enough to own bottles, I would suggest drinking sooner rather than later, although it is arguably a half decade away from being fully resolved. Thank you to the generous fellow diner who brought this.
Red
1995 Domaine Bruno Clavelier Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
Quite evolved dark red in colour. A beguiling and nose showing off the noble pedigree of its origin. Really silky and graceful tannins and delicious slightly decaying red fruit with good length and lovely balance. It's in a lovely spot, however I would drink sooner rather than later if I had this in my cellar.
Red
1996 Louis Jadot Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Domaine Louis Jadot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
Quite closed on the nose although slightly musty. Lovely mouthfeel with very gentle fully resolved tannins. Quite sweet red fruits although rather linear and did not really fill out on the mid-palate. A little underwhelming given the pedigree of the vineyard, however if one forgets that and thinks about the wine in the glass, it was a perfectly decent and very lovely fully mature Burgundy to enjoy over lunch.

Flight 4 - Venison, fondant potatoes, Burssels sprouts, chesnuts and bacon, cranberry pure (2 notes)

Red
2003 Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Crau France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
En magnum. Mid dark red in colour. Nose showed red fruits, clove and olive. Fine tannins, medium bodied with good concentration and and juicy red fruits on the midpalate. In a good spot and went nicely with the venison
Red
2000 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Corked :(

Flight 5 - Impromptu flight where reserve wine was deployed prior to desserts (1 note)

White
2010 Domaine Chandon de Briailles Corton Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
95 points
Pale yellow showing little colour evolution. Nose is fresh and beguiling showing white flowers. Tannins are so elegant! Medium to full bodied with white fruits and chalky minerality with a lovely line of salinity running through and perfectly judged acidity. There's serious concentration and GC power and length that just goes on and on. A really balanced and complete wine that should age for decades (if so inclined). Fresh as a daisy and could have been a 2020! My white WOTY and favourite WOTL.

Flight 6 - Christmas pudding (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
2001 Château Suduiraut France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
Orange in colour and on the nose too! Viscous and weighty mouthfeel with an inviting texture and more (you guessed it) oranges on the palate. Midpalate seems a bit hollow and wine does not really fan out and seems to lack the concentration, drive and complexity of the best dessert wines. Still, it fitted in nicely and competed well with the Xmas pudding!

Flight 7 - Bonus wines poured by (or obtained from!) other generous guests (2 notes)

White
2014 Paul Pillot Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Grandes Ruchottes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
En magnum. Colour just lighter than straw yellow. Slightly closed nose. Classy tannins and texture with an interplay between white and yellow fruits. Seems to lack the intensity I was expecting from a top C-M 1er cru in an excellent vintage.
Red
2008 Giuseppe Cortese Barbaresco Rabajà Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
En magnum. Nose seemed quite muted. Medium bodied with silky tannins, the acidity was immediately apparent, delicious cherry fruit with good persistence and length. Whilst the acidity suggests that the wine will age for decades, I am not sure if the fruit will keep up. In a good spot and a real treat to try.
