Lunch at Batard

Introduction

Organised a lunch at Batard which I didn't know was so difficult to book but thanks to the best rep at FWE we managed to sort out a reservation for a few food and wine lovers. The wines were mostly chosen by me since I had too many wines to bring back, so I opened those that I bought from FWE a few years ago - thankfully all were showing beautifully (and I do enjoy being the gamemaster while the rest do the guessing haha).

Flight 1 (7 notes)

White
2019 Armand Heitz Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot Les Tetes de Clos France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

A more aromatic and lighter profile compared to the Girardin alongside. Most thought that this was a village and the Girardin was a 1er. Rather simple and slightly flat on the first day but this improved the following day when it put on more weight. Still a very good wine mind, both this and the Girardin showed a lovely saline, elegant quality that I love in white Burgundies.
White
2019 Pierre Girardin Meursault Les Narvaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
93 points
My first time trying this producer and wasn't disappointed. Riper fruit than the Heitz that gave it more sweetness, definitely a larger-scaled wine but still very balanced. Really liked the tension and finish on this. Faded slightly on second day as the honeyed fruit became predominant. Shame the 1ers and above have gone up so much in price.

White
2018 Jean-Marc Vincent Santenay 1er Cru Beaurepaire Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Santenay 1er Cru

Extra blind bottle courtesy of Louis. Noticeably riper with more tropical fruit than the previous two wines, I thought this was a 2018 Chassagne. Good value before but seems like JMV's prices are heading up too.
White
2013 Franz Hirtzberger Riesling Smaragd Singerriedel Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau
95 points
Wanted to share this producer since most people don't have much experience with Austrian Rieslings. For me this is a ridiculous value given that you can get the top plot of the top producer for under S$200. Took time to open up but when it did it showed a beautiful balance with layers of honeyed fruit without being too sweet. Loved the generosity of the mouthfeel, but wasn't too heavy unlike the warmer vintages. Unanimously the favourite white of the lunch.
Red
2011 Château Magdelaine France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
93 points
Again I wanted to share Magdelaine with a group of people that I thought might appreciate it, showed similarly to my previous note in October. I think Magdelaine has such a floral, aromatic red-fruited nose that is completely different to the usual Bordeaux, so most couldn't place this correctly. Better on pop-and-pour, became a little simple and green compared to the Cerbaiona alongside but this was actually better at first. Still a great wine.

Red
2006 Cerbaiona (Molinari) Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
95 points
This vintage is so hard to find that I couldn't pass this up when I saw it at a relatively decent price. Was very tight at first so I asked to decant it, and it needed all that time as unfortunately the last glass was the best. Deep, dark-fruited nose that was so perfumed and floral, but not as much VA as the 2008 I had previously. On the palate it had a firm tannic grip but the glorious elegance of Cerbaiona. Quite a picture-perfect wine for me, this definitely can go on for longer than the '08.
Red
1993 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Landonne France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
94 points
Generous extra bottle bought off the list by someone at the table. Definitely a dark masculine wine, but the oak has fully integrated as the smoke and toasty wood didn't jut out from the fruit like what I have experienced with younger LaLas. Immense structure and still very youthful, the best Guigal I have had by far.
