Introduction

Wine lunch organised by Louis, not only the best rep at FWE but also discovered he has a terrific palate!

Flight 1 (5 notes)

Wow this was so youthful that there was quite literally no way to have guessed this as 2006 - most thought that this was a 2018 or 19. My first instinct was that this was a CC with the weighty but not overtly rich palate, was actually quite sure but got misled by pesky Louis. So incredibly fresh without much development, the only quibble was that the alcoholic note stuck out which contributed to the abrupt finish.

2017 Domaine Dandelion Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune Nature France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune

Had the anonymous barnyard and jammy nose of a natural style that I dislike. Impossible to place the year or origin for such wines, but everyone was in agreement that this was a village or below. No definition to the fruit that wasn't completely clean and a little underripe. For what it is going for on the secondary market, this is really awful.

2018 Frédéric Cossard Pommard 1er Cru Les Pèzerolles France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru

Better than the Dandelion but still slightly natty with a ripe and jammy nose of wild strawberries. The fruit wasn't too dense or dark so I thought that this was a 2019. Not the biggest fan of the crunchy red fruit that I actually enjoy in Beaujolais but not in red Burgundies.

2000 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Falletto di Serralunga d'Alba Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

My contribution. Had a deep, attractive floral nose like the Cerbaiona the day before, everyone managed to identify this as an Italian but thought it was a Brunello. The palate took a couple of hours to open up to show a beautiful elegance and silky tannins that only the best producers have. Ripe and sweet dark fruit with potpourri and tea leaves. Loved the intensity of the wine, definitely my best experience of Giacosa thus far.

2013 Willi Schaefer Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Tough to distinguish this and the Domprobst from the same vintage but I am going to try anyway. Both had good development but the citrus fruit on this was less overt, overall a more linear and taut wine whereas the Domprobst was fuller and creamier. Both were very enjoyable and textbook German Rieslings.
