Friday Night Brown Bagger

R&R

Tasted February 10, 2023 by AllRed with 116 views

Introduction

We gathered a week earlier than normal to accommodate vacation schedules and we decided to up the ante for this tasting as we had a lot to celebrate- R&D’s upcoming trip, Rose’s birthday one day earlier and her retirement at the end of the month, and lastly, the warmth and generosity of good friends.

Flight 1 - Warm ups (3 notes)

White - Sparkling
2008 Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut La Grande Dame France, Champagne
95 points
Double blind. Moderate mousse. Opens with apple, yeast and tangerine notes, with hints of vanilla creme and ginger in the background. Fine bead. Rich and complex, the predominance of pinot noir shines. Flavors of cherry, wild strawberry, red apple and dough. Fine bead. The acidity of the vintage has softened and integrated rather well in the nearly seventeen months since I last had this. If this bottle is representative, this wine is beginning to enter what should be a long window of prime enjoyment. (R&R)

White
2021 Peter Michael Sauvignon Blanc L'Apres-Midi USA, California, Sonoma County, Knights Valley
91 points
Double blind. Pale color with notes of gooseberry, lime, grapefruit and lemongrass. Bright acidity supporting an abundance of citrusy fruit. Balanced, with a lingering finish. I was *this close* to declaring L’Apres-Midi, but would have expected just a bit more richness to show. Still, easy to pick out as domestic sauv blanc. Clearly young, I’d give this three to five before diving in; from 2026+. (R&R)

White
2021 Dog Point Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough
Double blind. Opens with an odd chemical note- it reminded me of a rubber eraser, but others thought petroleum refinery. In any event, it was a bit off-putting and certainly seemed out of place. Stone fruit on the palate- tastes much better than it smells. While one often finds diesel and stone fruit in riesling- this wasn't it. No guess, and given what this ended up being when it was unveiled, it's a safe assumption this was not a representative bottle. Put in the lineup in honor of R&D's upcoming vacation. (R&R)

Flight 2 - Reds (5 notes)

Red
2007 Yount Ridge Proprietary Blend USA, California, Napa Valley
93 points
Blind. Lovely bouquet of currant, red plum, lilac and charred vanilla bean. Full-bodied with chewy tannins and flavors of toasted oak, mixed red and black fruit and chocolate. Long finish. Really nice weight and texture in the mouth; has a nice plush velvety texture. Excellent, and top one or two for the group in this flight.

This had been double decanted off its sediment a couple of hours before the flight was poured and continued to develop over a few hours. No rush to drink this and give it a couple of hours in the decanter. Excellent wine.
Red
1989 Château La Fleur de Gay France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
93 points
Double blind. Light color with a bit of bricking as well. Slightly medicinal, with cherry and tea leaf notes mixed in. A bit more life on the palate than the bouquet suggests- tea, cherry, mineral and sandalwood. Heightened acidity with a long finish. Excellent, even if I did not guess Bordeaux. (J&J)
Red
1990 E. Guigal Hermitage France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
92 points
Double blind. A bit darker than wine B, but not by much. Opens with a smoky, meaty note, almost like beef jerky. There's also a teriyaki-like sweetness to the perfume. Lovely red berry fruit overtones. Medium-bodied and fully-integrated. Red fruit with hints of game and spice. Guessed syrah. Very nice. 92-93 pts. (J&J)

Red
2007 Peter Michael Les Pavots USA, California, Sonoma County, Knights Valley
93 points
Double blind. Deep opaque crimson color. Aromas of plum, raspberry, toasted herbs and black cherry. Chewy, dense tannins with flavors of chocolate, plum, currant and blue fruit. Balanced, with a long finish. Easy to pick out as a sauvignon-based Napa wine. Showing very well, if a bit on the young side. 93-94 pts.(R&R)
Red
2009 Clos Fourtet France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
91 points
Double blind. Deep crimson color. Aromas of prune and raisin, with chocolate and raspberry undertones. Shows a bit of alcoholic heat as well. Big and ripe. Medium-bodied, not as full-throttled as the bouquet suggests it will be. Mixed fruit, chocolate and prune flavors. Lengthy finish.

Does not drink like Bordeaux...a surprise when it was unveiled. Big and modern, and not really what I'm looking for when I reach for Bordeaux. This had also been decanted for two hours. Still showing on the youthful side, I suppose if I had any I might bury it and hope for something better in 10-15 years' time. (R&D)

Flight 3 - Reds (3 notes)

Red
2009 Château Troplong Mondot France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
92 points
Double blind. A bit difficult to figure out, this opens with a meaty quality which is followed by something a bit briny, almost tapenade-like. Deep color; full-bodied and somewhat dense. Flavors of red fruit and spice, and the briny elements bleed in on the palate as well. I guessed syrah- I don't recall anyone thinking Bordeaux here. Despite being an enjoyable bottle, perhaps this wasn't a representative sample. This had been decanted for two hours. (R&D)
Red
2006 Yount Ridge Proprietary Blend USA, California, Napa Valley
90 points
Blind. Aromas of molasses, black fruit, plum and brown sugar. Full-bodied. Dense and chewy, with flavors of red and black fruit, spice, and toasted oak. Slightly austere compared to the '07 counterpart in the first flight. Good, but clearly not at the level of the '07. This had been double decanted off its sediment about three hours before the flight was poured.
Red
2007 Kapcsándy Family Winery Estate Cuvée State Lane Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, Yountville
94 points
Double blind. Opens with rubber and dark aromas which give way to something a little bit meaty, and more red fruit than black. To put it plainly, this is just a really easy wine to like. It's got great fruit, it's balanced, and you just want to keep sipping it. Long finish. Beautiful. Easily the wine of the flight. Drinking well now, but with plenty of life left at a very high level. 94+ pts. (R&R)

Flight 4 - Bonus (1 note)

Enjoyed with terrific conversation and R's apricot kolaches.

White - Sweet/Dessert
2001 Château Suduiraut France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
96 points
Standard bottle with a soft golden color. Apricot, honey, marmalade and pear notes. Rich and layered- I love the Suduiraut style. Abundant fruit, balanced by plenty of fresh acidity. Long finish. 96-97 pts. (R&R)
