Introduction

Small day trip with bsumoba and company.

Flight 1 - MacDonald (2 notes)

Baa!!

White - Sparkling
2019 Roses de Jeanne / Cédric Bouchard Champagne Blanc de Noirs Côte de Val Vilaine France, Champagne

Aromas of clear ripe and white fruits, white floral notes with soft, clean and crisp mineral notes. Awesome crisp mineral notes. Light and clean, toasty yeasty notes, even airy. There's something here on the nose that reminds me of an airy and light cream on a pastry.

Flavors of fresh, crisp white and green pears, river cleaned hay with amazing minerals. Creamy and fine texture on the palate but somehow so airy and clear. This was awesome.

Nose of dark red fruits, amazing red flowers, and soft black olives (more fruit-like than the way it is normally perceived like as a topping for example). Dark green brambles and fruited earth. So perfumed and aromatic.

Flavors of dark red fruits with a pitch of black fruits, and nice olive notes. Fruit-coated graphite veins (imagine veins the size of tree roots), and awesome savoriness in the minerals with a muddy, almost clay note.

I loved the elegance of the flavors but with good power that delivers the flavors in almost a velvety way. Amazing job in a tough year. Not really surprising, though.

Flight 2 - 001 (1 note)

Lunch with Jack for the tasting of the 001.

Red
2019 001 Vintners Cabernet Sauvignon Ecotone Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley
96 points
Aromas of dark earthiness, even some meaty notes with deep, dark and brooding red fruits. Scents of roses wrapped around iron bars, fresh and young tree notes, like a bunch of saplings.

On the palate is a really dark shade of red with a core of black fruits, with a depth of a dark void. Drying oak on the palate with dark bitter minerals, bitter and black graphite, black metal sconces, medieval dungeon vibes in a good way.

Will be curious to see how this evolves. The structure here is towering, just walls of tannin that may need a few years before it starts to deteriorate a bit. 96+

Flight 3 - VHR (3 notes)

Awesome evening of wine tasting and storytelling with Bruce.

White - Sparkling
N.V. Vilmart & Cie Champagne Premier Cru Grand Cellier Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru

Aromas of soft toast with yellow fruits, gentle yeasty notes and river pebbles.

Flavors are similar to the nose of deep yellow fruits with a gentle blend of yeasty notes and some gentle hay. A bit of sweetness but balanced by the yeast notes. A touch of acidity that helps keep the sweetness dialed back.

Red
2020 VHR Cabernet Sauvignon Vine Hill Ranch USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

Aromas of chalky earth, deep and intense dark red fruits with some wild vivacity, subtle yet deep chocolate, and a perfume of intense violet petals. With some time, scents of river minerals surface, and the nose darkens some, giving way to incense (in a good way) with autumn dead leaves.

Flavors of soft yet intense red fruit, dried tree bark, dried top soil, and steeped tea. Damp, dark minerals with some metal on the finish. Dark and intense elegance here. With some air time, this comes together well.

Well made for a tough vintage.

Nose of bright and intense cherries with a touch of cranberries, very fruit forward at the moment due to youth. However, the fruit darkens with time and loses some youthfulness within an hour, and starts walking the line between being a brooding beast and energetic elegance.

On the palate were fresh, bright red fruits with a dark intensity. A bit of dark iron, spiced oak, bitter minerals, steeped tea. Just like the nose, darkens into a darker fruit, deeper earth and some graphite.

This tastes much more familiar with what I'm used to from VHR. Not the final blend as this was a barrel sample, but this tastes pretty damn good already. Will be curious to see how they will finish this out.
