Heidi's Gang: The White Burgs Reign

St. Genevieve, Mpls, MN

Tasted April 19, 2023 by rocknroller with 138 views

Introduction

This was the latest incarnation of the Heidi's group. We had a great bunch of eight tonight (BE, CV, LI, KB, SS, JS, DD, CS) with a theme that gravitated to white burgs. And why not? The answer is always more white burgs please. We gathered at St. Gen's with the hope of being out on the patio - but not so much tonight with a chilly 40F and hard rain. That, however, did not dampend out spirits nor our resolve. The wines were killer tonight! Thanks to all for your contributions.

Flight 1 (10 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Bérêche et Fils Champagne Brut Réserve France, Champagne
92 points
Light gold color. Drank a glass over 45 minutes plus. Disgorged 6/21 with a 6gm dosage. The nose is bold with cherry notes followed by mashed apple, yeast and spice. The palate shows the depth, more richness and fkeshy concentrated fruit, apple, cherry, lanoline, yeast, green apple peel, with a touch of brioche and just a little oxidative character on the back end.

White - Sparkling
N.V. Krug Champagne Brut Grande Cuvée Edition 170ème France, Champagne
94 points
Light gold color. Drank a glass over an hour. Very fresh on the nose, freshly baked bread, well delineated pear, white flowers. The palate shows a very even handed character, balanced with that crystalline factor, pear, tangerine, soft, delicate minerality and lingering finish. Very well put together, and it shows, though I suspect this has more to show us. 93+ to 94pts.

White
2018 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Les Forêts France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
92 points
Light gold color. Drank a glass over an hour plus. Lovely nose with lemon and lemon pedge character, fennel, crushed shells and gravel minerality on the nose. The palate does radiate that Raveneau purity, lean, lemon and lime fruit, hints of white apple, steely, a sense of sweetness to the fruit as well. The pedigree shows, very nice.

White
2008 Louis Jadot Chevalier-Montrachet Les Demoiselles Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
95 points
Light medium gold color. Drank a glass over 2 hours. Gorgeous nose; lemon, freshness, sea air, limestone, spice and intensity with lift. The palate displays a focus and immense depth and grip to the lemon, lemon oil, spiced peach, ultra tangy, spices, waxy, dry stones, with amazing cut and intensity on the palate as this just goes on and on. In fantastic shape. 95 to maybe 96pts.
White
2014 Domaine Jacques Carillon Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
95 points
Light gold color. Drank a glass over 2 hours. Fresh nose with juicy fruits, lemon with an infusion of lime, intense, fresh green herbs. The palate is lean, stone and flint driven, very crisp, intense, lemon, orange, white citrus, elegant with an unmistakable intense along with wisps of orange. Great bottle. 95 to 96pts.
White
2014 Paul Pernot et ses Fils Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
93 points
Light gold plus color. Drank a glass over 3 hours plus. Quieter on the nose, lime blossom, saline, lemon pulp. The palate offers more vibrancy with an almost tannic, youthful grip; lemon zest, tart lemon, just a little orange overtone, wet stone and good length.
White
2014 Jean-Claude Ramonet Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
96 points
Light gold color. Decanted prior to event. Drank a glass over 2 hours. Just a brilliant bottle; amazing intensity and penetration; explosive nose, saline, swampy, cut pear, lemon, spice, lemon zest, lifted. The palate is driven, intense, saline, briny lemon-lime, cedar and woodsy notes, gunflint, focused and ridiculously long. Damn, this is a head turner. 96 to 96+pts.
Red
2001 Domaine Bertheau (Pierre et François) Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
94 points
Medium red color. PNP, drank a glass over 90 minutes. Sappy fruits, cherry notes, dried flowers, cigar wrapper on the nose. The palate shows the same sappy red cherry, blood orange, cigar, Asian spices, medium plus body and length. Excellent.

Red
2002 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
91 points
Dark red color. Drank a glass over an hour plus. Deep red cherry, funk, spicy, a little harsh on the medium plus bodied palate. Doesn't have the requisite elegance I'd expect.
Red
1996 Dominus Estate Napanook Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley
Very dark red color. PNP, followed a glass over 90 minutes. Reticent nose, dried earth, charred, mulled fruit, caramelized sugar, heat. The palate shows baked dark fruit, lots of alcohol coming through, brown sugar. I may be alone, but this is not right. Probable heat damage. No score.
