Introduction

Along for the ride with bsumoba and Co. for some tastings up in Napa. We were all curious for the new releases coming up.

Flight 1 - Bella Oaks (3 notes)

First tasting at Wheeler Farms with the ever so dapper Martin. The kitchen provided some protein for the tasting, with the Cypress Grove 'Bermuda Triangle' goat cheese being the best pairing for both reds.

White
2021 Accendo Cellars Sauvignon Blanc USA, California, Napa Valley
94 points
N: Light, fresh and somehow creamy ripe white and yellow crisp stone fruits, with just a touch of a deep golden honey.

P: Clean fresh grass, clean river minerals and similar fruits from the nose. Fruits become more ripe and weightier as it comes up in temp.

Great sauvignon blanc, you can enjoy it fresh at a cooler temp or just a notch weightier with more room temp.
Red
2017 Bella Oaks Vineyard Proprietary Red USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford
97 points
N: Dark black fruits with a sheen of red, dried dark green leaves, dehydrated herbs and tea leaves, and almost salty graphite.

P: Similar herbs from the nose stand front and center stage with a glow of dark red and black fruits, and stage lights of dark graphite.

Quite brawny on its own and tries to learn how to be more sophisticated. This transforms into something much better with protein like cheese. The tannin gets completely distracted by the proteins, allowing the fruit to slip by and work its magic on the palate. Enjoy now with a decant and/or some protein. 96-97

N: Immensely fragrant pink and red flowers. So perfumed and pretty with a dark streak of red fruits. There is a scent of a river as if you’re lying right next to one: young and intense flowers, pristine earth, and clean stony minerals.

P: Intense yet velvety elegance of red fruits with a really subtle creaminess. It’s almost like a blending of fruits and flower in a soft cream, flowers providing a touch of savoriness and fruits providing a nice ripeness.

Compared to the rough and masculine '17, this '21 already has so much beauty, intensity and elegance at its core. It’s so well integrated right now that it is hard to imagine what additional time will do in the barrel (hope not much more to make it that different). If it does make it more different, I really hope for the better as this is incredible as is. Honestly wish they can bottle this now but I know that's not happening.

Flight 2 - Vice Versa (7 notes)

Second tasting at Wheeler Farms with the ever so cool Jeff. Loved this session, we all practically geeked out on wine.

Red
2019 Vice Versa Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena
N: Dark but fresh blue fruits, dried slate with dried crushed minerals.

P: Dark red and soft purple fruits, fruited earth, and through this gorgeous fruit is a dark strikethrough of graphite which almost turns the red fruits black, giving a darker impression than it really is.

Rating this the same as the rest of the other times I've had this. Most approachable of the line up.

N: Buoyant and a very subtle neon character of red fruits with a touch of some blue. Gentle earth and oak, very subtle which adds elegance. With time, there’s a creamy note that displays youthful fruits.

P: Great core of fruit and a gentle approach, for now. Not as dark as the ‘19 but that will most likely come with more age. 96+

2019 Vice Versa Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena
N: Fresher, clean and almost bright blue fruits. Stony minerals with a soft glow of black fruits. The stony minerals takes up most of the stage here.

P: Black and darker fruits with dark earth and minerals. A kick of freshness compared to the LPV for me in this tasting, like the fresh leather smell of a new car.

Rating this the same as the rest of the other times I've had this. Loved the dark fruits in this.

N: A balanced blend of black fruits, earth and minerals; nothing stands out and this shows as a single unit.

P: Black fruits with an aura of blue, dark earthiness with a glow of dried stones and gentle graphite.

This was good but still a good amount of baby fat (that I still love). Will be curious how this will be in the future. 96+
Red
2019 Vice Versa Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
N: Dark red fruits with top earth. The earth is nicely dried, from the sun during high noon, and not from the lack of water. A sprinkle of pulverized dried oak and a really subtly spiced oak adds complexity to the earth.

P: Dark and dried red fruits with matching earthy profile from the nose and dark pencil lead.

Rating this the same as the rest of the other times I've had this.

N: I mean this in the best possible way, there’s a bit of sweat where it’s not offensive, “real” earth, dark but fresh red fruits, and pencil scribble on parchment.

P: Dark rich earth with an integrated brooding fruit, a light but dark coating of graphite like a cell membrane wrapped around the fruit.

Will be curious to see how this is later in the bottle.. I'm sure this won't be the same as it is now when bottled.

N: As cliché as it may sound, this is a good balance of everything of what I’ve had so far: dark earth, fresh but dark blue fruits with a brooding aspect, and expressive minerals.

P: Dark fruits, deep earth, pleasant minerals and dark graphite.

Such a pleasurable melding of all three bottlings. I honestly can’t tell is it due to the fact that I know this is a blend from three sites or is it just an amazing balance of the three sites. Slightly underperformed for me in this tasting, but still good. 97+

Flight 3 - Impensata (4 notes)

Last tasting of the day with the lovely Angela. Shout outs to Angela for allowing us to taste the Las Posadas in barrel.

White - Sparkling
N.V. Valentin Leflaive Champagne Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut CV 17 50 France, Champagne
88 points
N: Yellow fruits with gentle toasty notes, wet salinity and river minerals.

P: Very similar to the nose of dry minerals with bitterness, dry dirt, nice salinity, and salty bitterness. The yellow fruits holds a little too deep and heavy, if that makes any sense.. the pitch of the yellow fruits are too deep and unbalanced, it is missing something like some racy acidity.

Serve this on the cooler end if possible, the bitter minerals came clawing out as it left the cooler temps.
Red
2019 Impensata Merlot USA, California, Napa Valley
96 points
N: Red apples, fresh plums, light earth, and clean minerals. Fruits move away from apples with time, giving way for fresh strawberries.

P: Fresh red fruits with a swift kick up of dry earth, light but good concentration of graphite, gently bitter oak steeped in tea.

I might prefer these on pop and pour, or with not too much air. These were double decanted the night before and into a decanter three hours prior to our arrival.

This went well with cheese. A creamier fruit and vanilla surfaced.

Red
2018 Impensata Proprietary Red Wine Engelhard Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, Calistoga
95 points
N: Fresher red apples, a slightly stronger red fruit profile and forest floor.

P: Red fruits, dark and gentle earth, softly bitter graphite, heavily steeped tea with minerals as if it were accoutrement.

This too seemed to show a bit of tiredness, as if it were given too much air. Try on pop and pour and follow along. This had a fresher approach with all the air but lacked a bit of oomph. I preferred this much more on pop and pour and following along. 95+

2019 Impensata Las Posadas USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain
96 points
([Barrel sample])

N: Again, with fresh red apples (signature style or just a lot of air?), clean minerals and dried but soft earth.

P: A notch more intense and rich than the Engelhard, darker in fruits, leaning more towards black fruits. Burly tannin on the palate, giving the impression of steeped tea and dark oak.

This baby has much more structure compared to the other bottlings and will need some time for it to settle down and integrated, but enjoying now is not too bad of an idea, just follow along after opening. Try not to give too much air time. This should be better once in bottle. 96+

Closing

Another fun (and tasty!) trip to Napa. One thing I gathered from this tasting is that it is absolutely okay to pop and pour and just follow along. Unless the winemaker themselves has prepared the wine before in advance time and time again, might be a much safer approach than decanting with hours ahead of time and possibly missing a window where the wine shows best.

Huge shout out to bsumoba for putting everything together!
