Introduction

A taste through of Mourvedre wines and some Syrah's prior to an intern braai

Flight 1 (9 notes)

2014 Domaine Tempier Bandol France, Provence, Bandol
91 points
Intense nose of scorched earth, leather and tapenade with hints of hung game, smoke and mineral. The entry displays a vibrant acidity and savoury profile with a more linear progression than expected. The acid adds a freshness toward the mid-palate as it segues to an earthy, puckering leather-edged tannin. Still relatively compact with a long finish. There is a more sour fruit inside.

2016 Château de Pibarnon Bandol France, Provence, Bandol

Lots of ripe fruits on the nose with dark Damson plum, blackberry, game and roasted meat and meat stock. Savoury edged this opens more towards marmite notes. Good depth on this medium-bodied wine there is a dry leather texture that runs to a firm-ascending tannin that becomes quite astringent as the wine opens further. Quite a fresh style helped by lively acidity, the core is tapenade, dried earth, hot clay pots with a touch of fennel fronds, meat stock quality and a twist of white pepper. A touch more flesh than the Tempier but hasn’t the compunction nor length.

A sweet fruit bouquet with pastille, cherry and black raspberry along with some stem notes. Quite a light approach, but the tannins are firmer, giving some frame but becoming almost bitter. The mid-palate is cherry stems with more blackberry pastilles that aim to give some flesh. Some oak hovers in the background, but the bitter edge felt a little too much for me, like tasting bits of cherry pip

The 2016 version displayed far more with lift and intensity of fruits, savoury with black cherry, damson plum, sweet blackberry, meat, and a touch of leather.
Lighter entry as before, but this had sweeter fruits with a more rounded profile, a fabulous acid frame and gentle hessian textured tannins. Closes savoury with complex nuances with a far better length than 2013. Very enjoyable.

2016 Beaumont Wines Mourvèdre Cape Winemakers Guild Whole Bunch South Africa, Cape South Coast, Walker Bay, Bot River

A more intense nose than the previous two Mourvèdre's, this displays lots of ripe fruit with the accent toward black: black cherry, blackberry pastilles—earth with savoury nuances.
The entry is medium-bodied and less light than the previous 2 wines with good concentration and focus. The mid-palate is filled with black cherry flesh, tilled soil, black olive and some hung game. With sturdy, gravelly tannins the wine has excellent depth of flavour and a long finish. Closes with warm stones and hot gravel/mineral, with the tannins building a little as it opens up.

Light fruity nose with smoke and candied pastilles fruits. Slightly funky, the wine feels soft on entry and low on tannins. There is some acid but also a bitter character that protrudes. I wasn’t quite sure what to make of this as the candied elements and funk clashed. Not typical Mourvedre. It finishes short and lacks any structure. Distinctly wobbly.

2020 Paul Wallace Syrah Off The Record South Africa, Western Cape, Ceres Plateau
93 points
Mid purple the nose dazzles with violets, blackberry and black cherry. There are complex notes of garrigue, pressed blue flowers, fennel bulb and wild lavender adding to the freshness and lift that intrigues. 100% whole bunch but not by design! (Some piece of equipment blew up (possibly the de-stemmer!)
The palate is cool, fresh, elegant, and poised, reflecting the nose with its flowers and garrigue elements. The mid-palate harbours more hung game, and some red fruit joins the fray. The tannins are pretty narrow and grainy, but the one is still young and has potential—brilliant wine with good length. Fantastic debut!

2002 Beaumont Wines Shiraz South Africa, Western Cape

Aromas of furniture polish and fly spray with some old savoury notes with hints of balsamic and soy. The palate offers some ripe black fruits with liqueur chocolate. Sweet, resolved tannins with reasonable length, a cola tonic element creeps up as the wine closes.

The bouquet is quite feral with hung game, savoury tones, biltong, Frito’s and black pepper. Intense, the entry is full-bodied, with blackberry richness edged in a salty mineral quality. Dried black olive and ground peppercorns join the fray;and then coffee grinds, blackberry and some gluhwein spices. The wine has good concentration, a cooling sensation and some complexity with a long, drying finish (with a sprinkle of spice) as the tannins assert themselves. Compact and the back palate is furnished with glycerol from the alcohol, giving grappa notes. At 15% alcohol, it seems surprisingly integrated and nicely offsets the drier tannins.
