2019 Château Haut-Bailly

Decanted 4 hours with another 4 hours back in the bottle. Highly structured with fresh acids with dark red and black fruit hiding with some tobacco. All balanced and poised. More savory and will evolve in that manner. Try next one in 10 years and I'd like to see this in 15. Now that I think about it, a good large format wine that will go some distance.

Good wine and was pleasurable now. Fruit felt blue/purple, rounded, medium acidity, some vanilla still present on the wine. No rush to drink this now, but I think I prefer the straight cab in 2016.

2019 Château Montrose

Decanted 4 hours in AM and then in bottle for another 4 hours. Power without weight. 14.5% but you don't feel it. A level up in polish and preciseness from the Haut Bailly. More red fruited than the Haut Bailly with more layered complexity. Good freshness. Has the structure to go 30+ years, but I suspect this wine will be hitting his sweet spot much earlier, or the alcohol may prove to be too much.

Wine was slightly corked and maybe I underscored slightly as a result. 14.5% the same as the Montrose, but without the Power-without-Weight feel. Decanted 4 hours in AM and another 4 hours in bottle. Blue/blue purple fruits with balanced acidity (although not as fresh as the Montrose). Showed much more elegant than I expected was only a step behind the 100 pointer 2019 Montrose (although being a different/bigger wine). Encouraged by this bottle and look forward to the next one in a couple years which I hope won't be tainted at all. Compelling now but I'm going to follow more.

2001 Château Léoville Poyferré

Double decanted a few hours before enjoying. A line of fine sediment discarded in the decanter. I'd scoop these up in Europe for $100. Thank you William Kelley for flagging this one! Upfront acids quickly resolve into a smooth, but short finish. Rounded soft red fruit, mostly resolved tannin - with acids and concentration to still go another 10 years.

1990 Hanzell Cabernet Sauvignon

Double decanted a few hours before consumption. This bottle showed better than my last one. Less ripe, although clearly a ripe older Napa Cab. A stones throw from the 1988 Montelena for a lower price. Would like to check out better vintages of this wine.

1988 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon The Montelena Estate

Double decanted a few hours before dinner. In a great spot and no rush to drink up. Thick napa cab fruit that was aged into a thick wine with some slight overripe notes that lead you to Napa more than Bordeaux. Balanced with good freshness, resolved tannin and earthy nose. If auction prices are correct, a good buy for $100!

1996 Château Lynch-Bages

Double decanted a few hours before dinner. I wonder if it got a little bit too much air as the nose and palate were less powerful than the last bottle I had tried. Overall, mature example of Bordeaux and a great bottle to share with friends. LB did very well in 1996.
