Introduction

Tasting back vintages of Chatzivaritis Goumenissa, courtesy of Io (Trinity)

Flight 1 (11 notes)

Red
2007 Chatzivaritis Goumenissa Greece, Macedonia, Goumenissa
High temperatures in August stressed the plants and accelerated the maturation of Xinomavro and Negkoska. It was the first vintage that climate change became apparent with hotter summer but also warmer winter
-/-
Purely developed color, the wine shows earthy, leathery profile, caramel, dried red cherries, coffee, spicy, cigar box, decadent, welcoming, cinnamon, burnt sugar, Christmas cake.
Palate fully developed, red fruit, dissolve tannins, elevated acidity, lean, warmth, a bit aggressive, spicy finish
Better in the nose
Red
2008 Chatzivaritis Goumenissa Greece, Macedonia, Goumenissa
The vintage was as good as 2007 with high summer temperatures and nice concentration. There was some rainfall in September that disrupted further rise in sugar levels and thus contributing in retaining good acidity
-/-
Lower in density, cinnamon, dried red cherries, red currants, clove, pot pouri, more developed, mashed strawberry, dried herbs, warmer
In the palate, the wine shows again ripe character, Christmas spice mix, again feels warmer, candy, burnt sugar, brioche, red currant, dissolved tannins, medium acidity, still angular, thin to medium body, med finish
Red
2010 Chatzivaritis Goumenissa Greece, Macedonia, Goumenissa
Following the very bad vintage of 2009 where no Goumenissa was produced, the plants were very stressed but with good practices it regained its strength. Slow maturation with some rainfall in September that was successfully dealt with
-/-
The wine shows density, high intensity, spicy, earthy, leather, red fruit, cherry, cinnamon, clove, thin oak frame, tobacco, dried tomato, black pepper, ripe to overripe fruit.
In the palate, the wine shows again overripe cherry, leather, tight tannins, alcohol heat, coffee, still aggressive, again tobacco, chocolate notes, high acidity, the wine feels lean, medium finish
Red
2011 Chatzivaritis Goumenissa Greece, Macedonia, Goumenissa
A very good vintage as a whole with balanced temperatures. High during the summer with cool night, no rainfall during maturation, resulting in good phenolic maturity and high sugar levels. A rather late harvest ending on 5th of October
-/-
High intensity in the nose, decadent but also bright and lively, hearty, earthy and spicy, filled with sun dried tomatoes, dried red cherry and cinnamon, brioche, burnt sugar, layered and complex. It has a nice oak frame, toast and also forest floor
In the palate, the wine shows equal intensity, the fruit is riper and juicier than the nose, nice tannins, decadent, coffee, high acidity, leather, red currant, medium body, mineral, nice long finish.
Red
2012 Chatzivaritis Goumenissa Greece, Macedonia, Goumenissa
Low temperatures in the beginning of the year brought uneven development of grapes, resulting in a 20% drop of yields. But the overall phenolic maturity was very good and the harvest was great. Very high temperatures during summer are the reason this vintage shows a riper, more “honeyed” profile with round tannins. No rainfall during harvest
-/-
The wine show mellow profile, filled with red fruit jam, mashed strawberry, tobacco, leather coffee, brioche, cinnamon roll, earthy, dusty, it feels fully developed and more evolved than 2011.
Red
2013 Chatzivaritis Goumenissa Greece, Macedonia, Goumenissa
This is considered the finest vintage since 2007. It was very dry due to lack of rain from November to May (25-30% less). This resulted in water stress, giving a very concentrated and small grape, with very good phenolic maturity while bringing harvest earlier by 10-15 days. Harvest was good with no rain. A vintage with high alcohol, elevated acidity and strong tannins
-/-
In the nose the wine feels darked than 2o11. Strong leather character, red dried fruit, cherries, currants, spicy, coffee, alcohol heat but not as aggressive as expected, cinnamon candy, earthy, decadent, very welcoming with some fruit in alcohol too.
Full body, high in leather notes, elevated acidity, juicy, ripe red currants, cherries, earthy again, tight, strong tannins, coffee infused long finish. The alcohol is well in balance, old school varietal expressions.
Red
2014 Chatzivaritis Goumenissa Greece, Macedonia, Goumenissa
This is considered one of the worst vintages (for late ripening varieties). A lot of rainfall in the beginning with hailstorm coming later destroyed much of the production. Humidity brought diseases but warm days at the second half of summer tried to save the situation. Rainfall during harvest resulting in a 30% loss of production was the icing on the cake
-/-
The wine feels very poor in the nose compared to all the vintages tasted before, shy ripe red fruit, leather, tobacco, smoke, alcohol heat despite being just 13%. The wine feels lean, lacking complexity and depth, some pot pouri notes, dried red fruit, coffee, cinnamon. Give it some in the glass and you get notes of incense in a rather decadent manner.
In the palate, the wine feels lean, juicy ripe red cherries, leather, spice, currants, oak notes, dried tannins, a touch aggressive, coffee flavored med to long finish
Red
2015 Chatzivaritis Goumenissa Greece, Macedonia, Goumenissa
A lot of rainfall during winter but also in the harvest of late ripening varieties, hailstorm was also reported locally, yielding 10-40% less production. The vintage was demanding for the vineyard managers. Early ripening grapes had color and volume, late ripening ones showed more fruit
-/-
The wine feels tight, a bit closed as it is, lean with alcohol heat, coffee and spice, red fruit, earthy, black fruit, heavier red floral notes, thick oak frame, incense, Indian spice mix, smoked paprika, cumin, shows breadth, ripeness and balance.
The wine shows ripe fruit, red cherry and coffee notes, spice oak, very tight and aggressive still, alcohol heat, med acidity, feels lacking depth and complexity, very dry long finish
Red
2016 Chatzivaritis Goumenissa Greece, Macedonia, Goumenissa
Very low rainfall during winter, dry spring and summer with heavy rain at the of August. Early ripening varieties showed good levels of sugar and acidity. Late ripening varieties showed lower alcohol but mild tannins
-/-
The wine shows less intensity than the rest, very earthy, low notes of fruit, red cherries, berries, feels lean and aggressive, lacking the depth or its just in a strange/closed/ numb phase, coffee notes. Needs time to open up
Palate is different, shows more fruit compared to the nose, tight tannins, coffee notes again, medium body, very dry, oaky, earthy with med finish
Red
2017 Chatzivaritis Goumenissa Greece, Macedonia, Goumenissa
The first 2 months of the year were relatively warm, then temperatures dropped that delayed the vine cycle for 7-10 depending on the plot. There were very few disease outbreaks. For the first week of August, there were 4 days with continuous rain and then 1 day of rain for the next 2 weeks. This delayed the harvest. The month ended with high temperatures than kept throughout September. Harvest ended on the 23rd
-/-
The wine shows very impressive character, very well balanced between the ripe (almost) black fruit and an earthier, heavier spice mix, very ripe fruit but not overwhelmingly so, tobacco, vanilla, prunes, licorice, wet wood notes.
In the palate, the wine shows balanced character, dried and earthier than expected, ripe fruit, big tannic core, drying medium body, ripe red currant infused long finish.

Red
2018 Chatzivaritis Goumenissa Greece, Macedonia, Goumenissa
A very difficult vintage due to high humidity. Rainfall 2 to 3 times per week, some hailstorms were reported locally, laying the ground for botrytis. From the end of August till the end of harvest on 22/09, the weather was dry helping the vines come together. There was a 15-20% drop in yields, but the quality was very good.
-/-
The wine feels more evolved than the 2017, depending more on the oak derived notes, earthy, juicy red fruit notes, a few balsamic notes, Christmas spice mix, brioche, burnt sugar notes, vanilla/coconut notes, almond, feels lean. There is also a level of sweet notes
In the palate, the wine shows again decadent notes, ripe currants, cherries, leather, earthy, lean body, med tannins, balsamic notes, earthy, red cherry notes, med finish
