Community Tasting Notes 5

December 17, 2021 - Chatzivaritis Goumenissa vertical tasting (Oinoscent): This is considered the finest vintage since 2007. It was very dry due to lack of rain from November to May (25-30% less). This resulted in water stress, giving a very concentrated and small grape, with very good phenolic maturity while bringing harvest earlier by 10-15 days. Harvest was good with no rain. A vintage with high alcohol, elevated acidity and strong tannins

In the nose the wine feels darked than 2o11. Strong leather character, red dried fruit, cherries, currants, spicy, coffee, alcohol heat but not as aggressive as expected, cinnamon candy, earthy, decadent, very welcoming with some fruit in alcohol too.
Full body, high in leather notes, elevated acidity, juicy, ripe red currants, cherries, earthy again, tight, strong tannins, coffee infused long finish. The alcohol is well in balance, old school varietal expressions.

May 15, 2021 - Bottle bought in Athens 4 years ago. Xinomavro (70%) and Negoska (30%) grown on sandy clay terroir. The vineyard sits in Fyliria on the East slope of Mont Paiko in the Macedonian Region of Greece.

Consumed over 4 days, bottle was kept vacuumed in the fridge.

1st and 2nd: the wine smelled green olive and cherry tomatoes. We can find some raspberry as well. On the palate, the tannins are very grippy and we can feel the alcohol in the finish, making the experience less enjoyable.

3rd and 4th day: the tannins could integrate, we can still feel them but they become very fine. The aromas evolved toward darker fruits (blueberry, raspberry) and black olives, with some orange zest and white tobacco in the finish. The wine became elegant and fine, still with an enjoyable structure in the mid-palate. We can guess in the long finish that the tertiary notes (forest floor) are at the doorstep.

Overall, this is a great wine with complex aromas, making an interesting discovery of this Northern Greek appellation. Unfortunately, my last and only bottle. Currently, I would advise at least 4 hours of decant, but it would be very interesting to keep this wine until its 10th or 15th birthday to experience how such a such evolves over time. A producer to follow.

April 2, 2017 - Black and red fruits, black olives, liquorice. Very balanced with high acidity, alcohol and tannins. Will age easily for 10 years.

February 15, 2017 - Dark ruby. Plums, dusty cherries, sharp blackberries, later tobacco, olive jam and tomato compote, vanilla and cinnamon edge. Sweet entry, cherries, sour cherries, tomato compote, medium body, dusty tannins and bright refreshing acidity. Very vey nice.

February 7, 2017 - Dark ruby. Expressive and complex nose of dark cherry, berries, hints of plum, balanced presence of spice and oak. Medium+ body with balancing acidity, good fruit content and lingering finish. Needs some time to settle but its already enjoyable. 91+
