Introduction

ben came over to watch UFC and drink a whole bunch of wine. It was going to be an aussie/spain thing, but one of the wines was a bad bottle, so the La Magia got opened

Flight 1 (4 notes)

Red
2005 Glaetzer Shiraz Amon-Ra Barossa Valley Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
96 points
nose: utterly massive and yet balanced nose of eucalyptus, mint, blackberry, dark cherry, crushed berries, raspberries, oak, and smoke tones just flow into the nose. wide open and pure this is big on the fruit, but nowhere close to being over the top

taste: wonderfully balanced fruit with raspberry, cherry, mint, eucalyptus, blackberries, smoke, and some oak tones

overall: a stupendous wine. Insanely balanced and wide open. This is a blow away wine with impeccable balance, attack, transitions, and a really good long raspberry finish. It needs some air before drinking, but this is a special wine
Red
2006 Glaetzer Shiraz Amon-Ra Barossa Valley Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
95 points
nose: this has taken a while to come around( it had been opened for nearly 8 hours) and this nose is deep and sumptuous. Not as fruit forward as the 05, but very deep that is filled with loads of blackberries, cranberries, camphor, smoke, anise, black cherries. a black hole of a nose with northern rhone-like qualities while still be aussie in style, this is just a massive nose that has come around and is insanely deep

taste: still very young as the tannins and acidity take away from the mid palate a bit, but this is just balanced black fruit down to its core. Blackberries, Black Cherry, cranberry, raspberry, smoke, camphor, and anise just give off greatly balanced

overall: this can and most likely will pass the 05. This has some serious aging possibility and will certainly get better. This needed a lot of time to open up, but when it did, it really became an awesome wine. Really long and big feel with an extremely long black fruited finish
Red
2005 Bodega Numanthia Toro Numanthia Spain, Castilla y León, Toro
92 points
nose: very aromatic with cassis, smoke tones, floral bits, black berries, dark cherry along with some vanilla and tea leaves

taste: nice attack of cassis, black berry, dark cherry, vanilla, raspberry, and chocolate tones

overall: very young with a great attack and finish. THe tannins are sure kicking, but this nose was open for business after some decanting and it will be a lot of fun when the flavor profile catches up with the nose
Red
1999 La Magia Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
91 points
nose: nice classically seductive nose of saddle leather, herbs, spice, earth, dark plum, and dark cherries with some tones of tea leaves. very velvety and balanced

taste: lush and full feel with black tea tones, saddle leather, dark plums, herbs, and dark cherries

overall: not fruit driven at all, but very herbal and spiced driven with really good secondary characteristics starting to come through. Nice classically styled sangiovese with a velvety attack and mid palate feel that leans into a dark cherry+ smoky finish
