Wines That Don't Suck at Ciao Bella

Introduction

This was a really fun and stellar wine lineup.

Flight 1 (2 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. R. & L. Legras Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
91 points
Fairly toasty, assertive and yeasty for a BdB, although it has ample acidity and freshness that is more reminiscent of chardonnay. 90-91.
White
2009 Aubert Chardonnay Lauren Estate Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
94 points
Drink a good-sized glass from a magnum. Butterscotch, lemon curd, vibrant golden fruit, matchstick. With time there's a bit more wood that makes me wonder how long this magnum could last, but it was drinking fabulously tonight.

Flight 2 (2 notes)

Red
2009 Rivers-Marie Pinot Noir Summa Old Vines USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
94 points
Pop and pour, that hallmark Rivers Marie cranberry and orange rind. The wine manages to seem dense with earth and yet lively at the same time. This seemed more resolved and more nuanced than the 2014 regular Summa in the flight, which was no slouch.
Red
2014 Rivers-Marie Pinot Noir Summa Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
93 points
Sappy and dense with poblano pepper that got a little more green with air. There's depth here that I don't find in their Sonoma coast, and it seems to require some more time to resolve itself.

Flight 3 (2 notes)

Red
2007 Altesino Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
95 points
I believe pop and pour, drank a medium-sized glass over 90 minutes. Savory, old world, with leather, slight funk, loam and underbrush. This drank beautifully by itself and was even better with meatballs in tomato sauce.
Red
2012 San Filippo Brunello di Montalcino Le Lucere Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
92 points
3 hour decant, drank a medium-sized glass over 2 hours. Modern and fruity, with lively cherry and some vanilla. This drank young and was blown away by a 2007 Altesino reserva, but its clearly a quality wine that needs a few more years.

Flight 4 (2 notes)

Red
2012 Blankiet Estate Rive Droite USA, California, Napa Valley
95 points
See I'D RATHER's note for treatment because I could not follow his complex process. Red-fruited, total old world Bordeaux look-alike, even with the funk. Cherry, plum, blackberries, lots of fruit, and lots of secondary flavors. 95 easy.
Red
2010 Vieux Château Certan France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
See I'D RATHER's note for bottle treatment. This was extraordinarily deep and rich, while also being rather shy. Kind of a burly dense Bordeaux that seemed to require more time in cellar.

Flight 5 (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
2005 Château La Tour Blanche Sauternes France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
93 points
This took 20 minutes in glass to resolve. Quite honeyed and rich for a Sauternes, although the flavor profile is full of nuance.
