Introduction

When Truffle loving friends gathered around to celebrate our Inauguration to the Ordine dei CAvaliaeri del Tartufo e dei Vini di Alba

Flight 1 - The Welcome (2 notes)

5J Jamon , softly charred, with black truffle
Nocellara Olives

White - Sparkling
2009 Lanson Champagne Clos Lanson France, Champagne
92 points
Yeasty round and fatty, vinous champagne and with a full palate. Maybe could use a bit more sharpness but it could well be the 2009 vintage. Good yeasty, brioche feel across and very elegant and smooth on the palate. Good 92+

We did not record disgorgement date unfortunately but we assume its similar tot he one below so Ma22 with 3g/L

White - Sparkling
2003 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut France, Champagne
96 points
3 years since we had this last ( Papies 95) and if nothing else it was even better than we remember.
Exceptional wine, perfect balance, soft rich feel, round and lush, polished and with an effortless feel to it like it should be given the pedigree. We have had a lot of questions marks about this vintage and indeed when it comes to Krug it transcends the vintage worries. Impressive and an easy 96

Flight 2 - To Begin (1 note)

Un Truc de oeuf - Quail egg on blini with truffle caviar and lots of white truffle
Also experimental version with A5 Wagyu

White
2016 Cantina Terlan Terlano Terlaner I Grande Cuvée Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Alto Adige, Terlano
95 points
An exceptional wine that is not approaching its peak but gave us no reason to believe this will not perform for another 10 years ( good cause we have a few more).
Its been 4 years since we had this ( Papies 93) and now is for sure in its full stride and its getting to the level that the winemaker wanted, Italy's Montrachet.
Intense and concentrated, proper aromatic dominated by sauvignon blanc ( this is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay & Pinot Bianco) , bright and energetic and albeit is lower in acidity than one would expect has a prefect harmony on the palate. An exceptional wine. 95 and one to look out for.

Flight 3 - Lets get Serious (2 notes)

Egg Tagliatelle with Montagna di Tartufi Bianci

Red
1996 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
95 points
OH LALANDE, was Nicoletta's response when she tried it and this says it all given she is a tough customer to please.
We opened and left to rest for one hour but we chose not to decant as the wine felt on point.
Classic, elegant and very much alive, earthy, well secondary , lightest kiss of spice and frankly less austere than we expected this to be given a 1996 Pauillac. Bright nose too, cedar and light tobacco notes an a masterclass of classic and super well aged claret. 95 Easy and shame its our last bottle!.

1996 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Sassicaia
95 points
From a beautiful magnum , decanted for a good two hours as it felt it needed it.
And post that it was on point and at full stride, delivered to a set of tough palates and with impressive youthfulness still albeit with good evolution. Round, soft rich , juicy dark fruit. The nose is of a much younger wine especially comparing it to the 1996 Pichon Lalande we had just before ( Papies 95-96) and with a darker feel. Generally an impressive performance and with zero signs that this is on the way down. An impressive and elegant 95-96

Flight 4 - The Beef (1 note)

12yr old Spanish simmental, 65 days dry aged, Black Truffle to have a shower with.

Red
1996 Château Lagrange (St. Julien) France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
93 points
An arbitrage of a wine. Quality vs price Lagrange from great vintages perform and punch so much higher than their price tag.
We opened and left it to rest and we did not feel it needed more agitation to get it to full stride. Earthy, well evolved, not fully mature but will be in the next 5-6 years so we feel like this is one to start drinking more and more as it felt as such. Earthy, tobacco, cedar, super classic and elegant nose, healthy and very much alive wine and will put a smile on every classic Bordeaux lovers face. Did for us. 93 , easy

White - Sweet/Dessert
2004 Hatzidakis Winery Vinsanto Greece, Aegean, Cyclades, Santorini

Our 6th note on this wine and once again delivered and very little we can add that we haven't said before. These 16yr aged in barrel bottlings of 2004 are simply stunning. 94 once again

Flight 6 - Assortment of Cheeses (1 note)

Red - Sweet/Dessert
2010 Anama Cyprus
94 points
Its been some time since we had one of these and it was a clear reminder that its at the peak of what the island can deliver viticulturally. Broke tradition with classic Commandaria and ended up redefining it and by far a superior product. Impressively elegant, soft, round, polished and with an effortless balance. Rich feel for sure, not heavy, soft nutty and an impressive result. This will last another 30 years and continue to improve. We bet on it. 94++
