Hyacinth Dinner

Hyacinth, St. Paul, MN

Tasted November 8, 2023 by rocknroller with 76 views

Introduction

Six of us gathered for a mid week visit to Hyacinth in St. Paul (DD, ML, KB, SS, CS, BB). It's been awhile for most of us being here, and it was good to get back. The restaurant recently changed hands, but looks to not be missing a beat. This was night with some variety and fun new wines and wines we don't often drink.

Flight 1 (8 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Alexandre Filaine Champagne Cuvée DMY France, Champagne
92 points
Light gold color. Drank a glass over 40 minutes. PN45, C35, PM20. Rich and powerful with a core of red fruits; poached pear, tangy acidity, quince, river rock, mildly oxidative, almond paste. 92+pts.
Rosé
2021 Giovanni Montisci Cannonau di Sardegna Barrosu Rosato Italy, Sardinia, Cannonau di Sardegna
92 points
Medium Rhubarb color. Drank a glass over an hour. This was our first experience with this wine and producer. Very fun, and different from most rose's. Floral, with rose petals and rose water, damp and earthy, wafting minerality, orange, blood orange, Meyer lemon, fresh herbs and garrigue, spices on a medium bodied frame. There's some structure here and a little bigger frame than is my typical go to rose, but this maintains the elegance and balance that I seek while bringing in a lot of complexity that makes this quite introspective. Pricey for rose, but definitely worth seeking out or a rebuy.
White
2016 Domaine François Cotat Sancerre Les Monts Damnés France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre
93 points
Pale green gold color. Drank a glass over an hour. Slate, fennel, citrus, white peach, sleek with great minerality and that powdery dry extract and citrus that I love, long and precise.
White
2019 Schiopetto Collio Friulano M Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Collio
94 points
Light gold color. Drank a glass over an hour plus. 95% Friulano, 5% Riesling. Slate, stone fruits, subtle fusil, riveting acidity, supreme elegance, powdery, lychee, almond skin, crystalline minerality, transparent and pure with an intensity that just keeps giving. Gorgeous wine. 94pts or better.

Same bottle as Bellissimo. Reductive, improved by copper, but not adequately.

White - Sweet/Dessert
2009 Château Suduiraut France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
93 points
Surprisingly dark gold color - especially from 750ml. Drank a glass over 30 minutes. Advanced, unctuous, quite spicy, orange creamsicle, mango, baked apricot, a bit weighty. Very good, but this bottle was seemingly further along than expected. 92-93pts.
