Celebration for Celine at Tenuta/P90

Introduction

Haven't been to my favourite wine bar for a while but got summoned on a school night to celebrate the resident somm being the top student in the Advanced Somm exam in Singapore.

Flight 1 (6 notes)

White
2017 Coche-Dury Bourgogne Blanc France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc
91 points
After a disappointing aligoté last weekend, this showed some semblance of the Coche pedigree. Rich but with good focus, some guessed GC but personally thought this didn’t exceed its humble origins - lacked the intensity and delineation of better plots despite having good weight. Definitely not worth the market price.
White
2018 Miani Friulano Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Friuli Colli Orientali
91 points
Was stumped by this. Could only land at non-Chardonnay but definitely wasn’t a grape that I was familiar with. When prompted that it was an Italian, I guessed a Terlano white. Oily, waxy texture with honey and hazelnut notes. Mainly tropical rather than citrus fruit, good acidity despite the warm vintage that gave a rounder nature to the wine.
Red
2019 Opus One USA, California, Napa Valley
86 points
Guessed 2015 American Cab. Purple, dense fruit with a fair amount of greenness and cigar box notes that didn’t come together. Sweet and glossy, with prominent alcohol despite the label saying 13.5%.

1999 Heitz Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon Martha's Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
95 points
My contribution. Guesses ranged from Pavie to Oz Shiraz, but thought the best guess was Sassicaia based on the sweetness and plummy notes. Showed quite differently from my previous bottle which felt like it didn’t give everything that it had. More expressive and absolutely imperious with air. Deep, dense cherry fruit but with the restraint of an old Napa Cab. With air the Martha’s Vineyard signature of camphor and eucalyptus emerged. Still very fresh and most guessed 10 years younger, glad to have shared the beauty of a Napa Cab with some age.
Red
2020 Fattoria Poggio di Sotto Rosso di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino
91 points
Guessed 2019 Burgundy until someone told me it was in a Bordeaux bottle. Coffee and tar on the nose, palate was very primary but wasn’t jammy unlike many 2019 Burgundies. Smooth and polished in style, had the elegance of a good maker.

2006 Domaine Denis Mortet Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
92 points
Shared by friends from another table. Plush and spicy, thought this was more Vosne than Gevrey. Left this in a glass and it improved markedly with air as the concentration from old vines came through. Hedonistic, in an old-school manner. Still very fresh and so sturdily built, has a long way to go.
