Introduction

Got together with Tim and Phil to take the Coravin to quite a few wines and to eat quite a lot of steak.

Flight 1 (25 notes)

White
2020 Alheit Vineyards Chenin Blanc Hereafter Here South Africa, Western Cape
From Coravin. A little almond meal joins orange and lemon, touch of sweet spice, creamy notes, slightly animal underpin. Juicy, rich, mouthwatering acidity but not sour, generous citrus fruit shows a little orange as well as the lemon, lng, integrated grip, nice. Non intrusive alcohol warmth on the finish.
White
2020 Alheit Vineyards Cartology Bushvines South Africa, Western Cape
From Coravin. Slightly dusty glass detracts a little, apple, lemon, cream, very slight butter, a little sweet spice, smidge of lanolin, touch of cats pee. Tangy, juicy, mouthwatering acidity is not sharp, muted green apple, a little citrus, textured grip offers a rasp across the mid palate. Slight alcohol warmth on the finish. Medium plus length. Hmm.

White
2017 Otronia Chardonnay III & VI Argentina, Patagonia
Buttery with grapefruit, leesy, almost a little passion fruit. Not a very Chardonnay nose fruitwise. Juicy, fleshy, textured burr, saline, lemon, a little almond skin bitterness. Interesting and kind of nice but not really displaying any typicity for me.
White
2019 Primitivo Collantes Vino de la Tierra de Cádiz Viña Matalián finca Matalián Spain, Andalucía, Vino de la Tierra de Cádiz
From Coravin. Waxy, saline, muted citrus. Juicy, fleshy, textured burr, saline, a little green almond, almond skin bitterness. Yum.
White
2017 Geyer Wine Co Sémillon Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
Honey, green apple, a little saline underpin, ripe lemon. Juicy apple, lightweight and super-fresh, a little saline and lemon, surprisingly supple, rather nice.

White
2023 Patritti Warriparinga Vineyard Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Adelaide Hills
Neutral nose shows a little lemon and a kind of sandalwood/slightly floral note. Juicy, slightly sharp anonymous citrus, softly textured rasp. Short. Meh. When ambition falls short of potential - apparently this is from 75ish year old vines in a .24ha site.
Red
2014 Lupé-Cholet Aloxe-Corton 1er Cru Les Fournières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Aloxe-Corton 1er Cru
From Coravin. A little ripe red hued fruit, earthy savoury, a touch of red currant, juicy, slightly tart, slightly hard, very slightly bitter red hued fruit, drying talc textured grip persists long, savoury finish with a touch of white pepper.
Red
2015 Hoddles Creek Pinot Noir 1er Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
From Coravin. Smells softer than the lupe chalot; a little cream, red and black cherry, sweet spice, tiny herbaceous note. Juicy, very slightly tart red cherry fruit, a little herbaceous nte here as well and a touch of woody texture.

Red
2008 La Pousse d'Or Corton-Clos du Roi France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
From Coravin. Earthy, savoury, brambly fruit, slight alcohol prickle, leather. Juicy, brambly fruit is beautifully integrated with the burry tannins, earth and leather offer tertiary support. Yum.

Red
2009 Château de Pommard Pommard Grand Vin France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard
From Coravin. Initially cellar stink/wet clay which blows off revealing ripe black fruits, sweet spice, a little black liquorice and burnt twigs (?), wet dog. Medium plus intensity acidity almost feels adjusted, black fruit, alcohol warmth, tannins are woody flavoured but silky and persistent, all travels long but it's a little too 'big' for me. Time may help.
Red
2020 Bonny Doon Vineyard Le Cigare Volant USA, California, Central Coast
Clean, red berry fruit, a little spice, blackberry, pepper, a little smoky note. Beautifully integrated acid, fruit, spice, softly grainy tannins, long, elegant, fresh, generous, really lovely.

Red
2016 Château Belgrave France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc
From Coravin. Blackcurrant tends to a little cassis, plummy underpin, sweet spice, cedar, mint. Juicy, fresh acidity, plentiful textured grip is a little chalky, fruit very present, black hued, lovely, long, balanced, yum.
Red
2016 Château Sénéjac France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc
From Coravin. Rich, ripe, plums and black cherry, cassis, more of the same on the palate, juicy, integrated, dying slightly chalky tannins rasp the back of the mid palate, long. Lovely.

Red
2014 Te Mata Estate Coleraine New Zealand, North Island, Hawke's Bay
From Coravin. Fresh, a little mint pursues black fruit around the nose, cream, butter, cedar in support. Juicy, savoury, cedary, fresh black fruits, woody tannins, rather lovely.
Red
2014 Rockford Shiraz Basket Press Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
From Coravin. Savoury and concentrated black fruits; berry, spices, still quite closed and brooding, opens to show a little cream and polished oak. Juicy, savoury, blackberry fruit, fine woody tannins, simple but balanced and pleasant.

Red
1996 Mount Mary Quintet Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
From Coravin. Red and black fruits, brambles, earth, leather, a little cream, sweet spice, a sense of ripeness, fruit sweet and pretty. Juicy, fruit sweet on the palate as well, plenty of grainy tannic burr, leathery, earthy, Hmm. Interesting
Red
2002 Henschke Cyril Henschke Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley
From Coravin. Jammy, black and blue fruits, alcohol prickle, sweet spice. Juicy, dense, black fruits are baked, woody tannins, it's better on the palate than the nose but not for me.
Red
1990 Henschke Shiraz Hill of Grace Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley
From Coravin. Plenty of spice which proves peppery, assisted by a touch of alcohol prickle, a little brambly fruit, leather, black tea, baked earth. Juicy, black hued, brambly fruit is ripe but not overripe, leathery tannins are graining grippy, long, pretty good.
Red
2013 Monchiero Barolo Montanello Riserva Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
From Coravin. Oak, savoury, spicy, plummy fruit, slightly floral top notes, caramel, a little jammy. Juicy, plenty of woody tannins are drying, grippy, tight, fruit ripe and present but in the background. Hmm.
Red
2013 Monchiero Barolo Riserva Rocche di Castiglione Falletto Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
From Coravin. A little cherry, dried flowers, oak present but far more controlled here. Medium plus intensity acidity is juicy, savoury, grippy tannins are drying and medium plus intensity, that cherry fruit is present though. Balanced. Nice.
White - Fortified
1996 Boll & Cie Ratafia de Champagne France, Champagne, Ratafia de Champagne
"Served blind.
From Coravin. Musky, slightly herbaceous, meaty, slightly spirituous fruit, a little orchard fruit, sweet tangy, slightly sharp acid, red berry and textured grip, slightly out of whack.
I guessed old vintage Jura but I really had no idea"
White - Sweet/Dessert
2014 Peacock Hill Good Company Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley
"Served blind.
From Coravin. A little nail varnish remover, unripe apricot, citrus, slightly sharp acidity, lie, slight apricot, candied peel. Hmm.
Thought this might be a riesling based botrytis riesling"
Red - Fortified
1978 Wendouree Vintage Port Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley
From Coravin. Dense black fruits, liquorice, alcohol prickle, plenty of sweet spice, a little fig, raisin, touch of walnut, minty notes. Juicy savoury but with a sweet black fruit core, liquorice, raisins, figs, cloves, a little nutmeg, slight bitterness, super interesting, complex, pretty good stuff.
Red - Fortified
1998 Morris Shiraz Vintage Port Australia, Victoria, North East, Rutherglen
From Coravin. Blackberry, sweet spice, alcohol prickle, baked blackberry jam, slight cinnamon, walnut, slight burnt liquorice. The palate offers everything th4 nose implies; big, thick, concentrated to the point of savouriness, black fruits, alcohol warmth on the finish. Sugar levels are too high for the acid. Nah
Red - Fortified
N.V. Talijancich Rare Tawny Aged 30 Years Australia, Western Australia, Greater Perth, Swan Valley
From Coravin. Concentrated, brown sugar; muscovado, toasted nuts, a little citrus peel, rich, smells sweet, baked orange, very slight salinity, toffee, slight salted caramel. The palate is a reflection of the nose but with more of the caramel and brown sugar here, sweet spice. it's kind of nice in a brown sugary way...

Closing

Lovely and semi-messy evening with the chaps. Best bottle of Henschke wines I've ever tried was the high point for the night...the Hill of Grace, not the rather disappointing Cyril.
