Introduction

Another tour de force tasting orchestrated by John and Mark. Food by Elizabeth and Ludovic, just delicious!

Flight 1 - Chablis (2 notes)

Always nice to start with Chablis. In this case I found the Drouhin-Vaudon to be far more compelling

White
2013 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Bougros Côte Bouguerots France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
Minty, schist, very lemon/lime, salty and citric. Some tropical aromas sneak in with more air, and this loses freshness while gaining a slight oxidative edge. It's a nice wine but lacks cut and precision.

White
2012 Joseph Drouhin / Drouhin-Vaudon Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
Flinty, reductive, love the style! Crackling intensity in the glass, mmmm, mouthwatering minerality. Very successful!

Flight 2 - Gevrey-Chambertin (4 notes)

Ahh Gevrey, such pure and seductive fruit on every wine! Each of the first three wines had some small warts, but all were distinctive and full of character. Any would be stunning with a meal. However the Duroché simply stole the show. That was stunning!

Red
2013 Faiveley Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Bloody cherries, so juicy, gorgeous, perfumed, very pure. It has quite a lot of structure, and the longer this airs the more the structure comes to the fore and this starts to lock down. I love the fruit purity and the stuffing, this will need a bit of patience or a slow evening with a roast chicken.

Red
2012 Domaine Denis Bachelet Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
A smoky, scorchy, ashtray thing jumps right out at me, and then John points out the green notes. Definitely a spicy, stemmy, bell pepper edge. It seems to be too much for the people around me, but I liked the edginess. The palate is a different story, deep, laser focused, really pure and very interesting. This is a classy and assertive wine.

2010 Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Petite Chapelle France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Mmmm, seductive and juicy, so silky on approach but with very sneaky, dusty tannins. There is incredible structure hiding underneath the lovely fruit.

Mmmm, a big blast of pine forest, perfume and umami. Wow, that is a mouthful, utterly explosive, the energy and vigor on this is just nuts. Absolutely stunning.
