The Wine Summit At Lake Louise

Tasted May 30, 2008 by Hank Gillespie with 514 views

Introduction

Each Friday evening at The Wine Summit, Chef Hans Sauter creates a wonderful buffet dinner. This dinner is full of sumptuous creations. It’s also an opportunity, for those so inclined, to bring out some wonderful wines from The Post Hotel’s cellar. This cellar boasts over 40,000 bottles.

Our table elected to partner our dinner with four wines from Domaine Jacques-Frederic Mugnier, all from the 2002 vintage. We ere interested to see the similarities and the differences between the wines.

The tutored tasting of Domaine J-F Mugnier’s wines was scheduled the next day, and this might create some background for appreciating those wines.

Here is a short note on each of the wines :

Flight 1 (4 notes)

Red
2002 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny
Medium bright ruby in colour; aromas are pure and clean with a slight floral note – primarilycherry fruit and a little bit of roasted coffee; tangy cherry fruit on the palate; medium body – fine acidity; rolls out to a fresh lasting finish.
Red
2002 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuées France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
Somewhat darker ruby – extends out to a narrow rim; much fuler on the nose; richer dark cherry – spice – mocha; very much fuller on the palate; harmonious – fine balance; riper and sappy cherries on the palate, with some complexity resulting from the oak; spices – roasted almonds; excellent acidity – soft tannins showing on a solid spine; extends to a remarkably long finish.
Red
2002 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
Similar depth of colour as Les Fuees; aromas bring forth more smoke, but also penetrating dark cherry fruit – floral notes coming up from short sniffs, as does some sweet licorice; medium full body; coats the mouth with generous and deep cherry fruit; some oak, but it’s unobtrusive; excellent balance of acidity and tannins; rolls out to a very long finish with pure and clean cherry fruit.
Red
2002 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Musigny France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
Dark, rich ruby colour – also showing some fullness on swirling; aromas are huge – running through and showing more ample depth – warm, rich black cherry and some hints of ripe strawberries – some smoke and also fresh tree blossoms, and a little hazelnut; round, rich texture; harmonious melding of the tannins and acidity; ripe and sappy cherry fruit, with an edge of sweet oak; also noted some spicy mocha and cashew flavours; pulls all the stops on the finish, where everything seems to reappear. WOW !

Closing

Clearly the Musigny topped the other wines – as expected – but the real surprise for me was the showing of the 1er Cru Les Fuees. It’s a wine that I had not tasted in any vintage, but comes very close in quality to the 1er Cru Les Amoueusses. Something to watch for ahead.
