Introduction
32 barrel samples of 2022 Bordeaux were tasted. Some of of my tasting notes were too brief to be posted and I almost only included here the most interesting or memorably wines.
Flight 1 (31 notes)
Red
2015 Château Lafite Rothschild
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Had a small sample beside Bordeaux 2022 primeur tasting. Good wine, very approachable and soft ending.
Red
2018 Château Smith Haut Lafitte
France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
Bordeax 2022 primeur tasting and some other various vintages of the same chateau.
Tasted many 2022 bordeaux in a short time. In this context the 2018 Smith Haut Lafite was a very welcomed tasting. Dark fruits and polished with good concentration.
Red
2022 Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion
France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
Bordeax 2022 primeur tasting and some other various vintages of the same chateau.
Very fresh and accessible despite being so young.
95-97
Red
2022 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Elegant and concentrated. Very easy to like this young. Right after the first impression of dark berries, there is a second taste that is lifting everything up a bit further.
Best out of 33 Bordeaux primeur 2022 tasted.
97-99
Red
2022 Château Léoville Las Cases
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Bordeaux primeur 2022 tasting.
I was not so impressed given the expectations but the wine was good.
This was one of the last wines I tasted and my palate was probably getting a bit tired of new impressions. I only got a very small sip.
95-97
Red
2022 Château Brane-Cantenac
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
With dark berries. The most powerful and most difficult Margaux to assess due to the need of much more age amongst all the Margaux wines tasted (I didn't taste Ch Margaux, Palmer or Rauzan-Segla).
Bordeaux 2022 primeur tasting.
95-96++
Red
2022 Château d'Issan
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
Bordeaux 2022 primeur tasting and this wine was one of my favourites.
Already a bit developed and with good concentration. Margaux typicity with earthiness. Really delicious. I'm sure D'Issan 22 with the power and ripeness combined with enough freshness is a good example of the strengths of 2022 in some cases. Ch Ferriere was just close behind.
96-98
Red
2022 Château Ferrière
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
I like this wine more than the 2019 and 2016 version. This is more powerful but still has kept the Margaux characteristics. Menthe and I think I tasted toffee at the finsish? Will have to follow this at bottle release.
Bordeaux 2022 primeur tasting.
94-96
Red
2022 Château Kirwan
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
This wine was less powerful and ripe than many of the other wines from Margaux but instead it was the wine that showed the best freshness. Vanilla and polished fruit
. The last time I had Kirwan was the 1998 but that was not at all the same positve experience.
Bordeaux 2022 primeur tasting
93-95
Red
2022 Château Giscours
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
Again one of my favourite Margaux of 2022.
I think it eventually will prove to have more weight than the 2019.
Bordeaux 2022 primeur tasting
94-96
Red
2022 Château Durfort-Vivens
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
Earthiness and elegance. Less difficult/massive young than the 2020.
Bordeaux 2022 primeur tasting.
95+
Red
2022 Château Léoville Barton
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
A step above most of the 2022 St Julien I tasted and this was better than Beychevelle.
Powerful wine.
Bordeaux 2022 primeur tasting.
95-97+
Red
2022 Château Beychevelle
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Like most St Julien this year a very polished and soft finish with basicly concentrated cassis taste. Both Talbot and Branaire Ducru was similar in this respect. Breychevelly also had some dry cherries.
Bordeaux 2022 primeur tasting.
Red
2022 Château Talbot
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Good concentration with smooth dark berries.
Not a structured wine but this was very enjoyable and for me next to Branaire Ducru one of the bargains at this Bordeaux en primeur 2022 tasting.
94-96
Red
2022 Château Branaire-Ducru
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
I can confirm what has already been written by others that this is one of the bargains of 2022. My perspective is a comparison between in total 32 other wines.
Bordeaux 2022 en primeur tasting.
94-96
Red
2022 Château du Tertre
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
Very similar taste as the 2019 but the 2022 is more powerful.
So far I'm very impressed with most Bordeaux 2022 I have tasted, especially the wines from Margaux. They have kept their elegant signum but with more concentration.
Bordeaux 2022 primeur tasting.
94
Red
2022 Château Cantenac Brown
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
I liked it but this Margaux tasted tighter and younger than many others. Good acidity.
So far I'm very impressed with most Bordeaux 2022 I have tasted, especially the wines from Margaux. They have kept their elegant signum but with more concentration.
Bordeaux 2022 primeur tasting.
93-95
Red
2022 Château Pontet-Canet
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Powerful but bitter/green. So heavy and difficult. This is not according to my preferences. I recommend trying before ordering more than one bottle.
Bordeaux en primeur 2022 tasting.
The drinking experience today is lower but I give it a generous 90p because of the power and the early stage.
Red
2022 Château Phélan Ségur
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
Opulent style.
Very promising, but slightly bitter aftertaste this early. To be followed.
93-95
Bordeaux 2022 primeur tasting.
Red
2022 Château Beau-Séjour Bécot
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Only brief impression. Elegant. Didn't have the time to take a detailed note.
95-96
Red
2022 Château La Gaffelière
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Only brief impression. Soft and very pleasant. Didn't have the time to take a more detailed note.
Red
2014 Château Durfort-Vivens
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
A bit dissapointing given the high quality of years like 2019, 2020 and 2022.
Only brief impression. Didn't have the time to take a detailed note.
Red
2022 Château Lascombes
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
Incredible sweetish scent.
Only brief impression. Didn't have the time to take a detailed note.
The aftertaste is "perculiar" (according to my notes) and this wine certainly needs more development.
92-95
Red
2022 Château Beauregard
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
So delicous.
Only brief impression. Didn't have the time to take a detailed note.
Red
2022 Château Calon-Ségur
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
Early to assess but this is a concentrated wine with fine tannins.
95++
Red
2022 Château Lafon-Rochet
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
This wine was served a bit colder than many others at the tasting event.
The reason could be the slightly bitter? aftertaste.
Red
2022 Château Fleur Cardinale
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Only brief impression. Didn't have the time to take a detailed note. Weaker than most of the other (and often much more expensive) wines at the event.
Red
2022 Domaine de Chevalier
France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
Only brief impression. Didn't have the time to take a detailed note.
Lovely. Red berries with dry cherries.
Early impression but with what I know today I would rather bet on the 2019 which I already know is excellent and seems slightly superiour.
Closing
The quality of the vintage 2022 for red bordeaux is very good and though I'm aware that many of my ratings are high they should nevertheless be fair. But let's wait for the bottled versions to see.
The wines from Margaux and St Julien were among the best in average quality, but to be fair, I didn't taste that many wines from the right bank or Pauillac. Pichon Lalande was probably the single one best.
I think many of the wines I tasted also could be enjoyed on the younger side. Not that they are not able to age for a long time but rather that the tannins in many cases are so well integrated. They often tasted so well already this young!
It strikes me how similiar many wines tasted. Some of them were really difficult to describe with new words compared to the previous one. From what I have tasted so far, the style is ripe (often with freshness), fruity, well balanced and concentrated. Despite (or because of) the extreme heat in France in 2022, the vintage produced several delicous barrel samples! Many wines were also very elegant and even with the the hot weather-conditions, thick skinned and small berries, I do not associate most of the tasted wines with the negative meaning of "modern style" (overuse of oak and overripe) or wines that could be the result of a hot vintage. (overripe with noticable alcoholic heat).
I wish I have had the time to taste more of the less expensive wines. I'm sure the vintage produced very good bordeaux regardless if pricelevel.
