Los Gatos, California

Introduction

This was a fun, interesting get together featuring a quirky array of BYO wines served with equally eclectic BYO dishes. Some oddities and some really great wines. I’ve noted them roughly in order of sweetness even though they were not opened and poured in this order.

Flight 1 (13 notes)

White
1997 Nikolaihof Riesling Fass Severin Vinothek Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau
Medium yellow. Deep, mellow, low pitched aromas without any petrol. Medium to full bodied. Completely dry stone fruit drenched with soil. Interesting herbal thread, high acidity, grapefruit on the finish. Impossibly fresh and not yet fully mature. Great dry Riesling.
White
2007 F.X. Pichler Riesling Smaragd Loibner Oberhauser Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau
Full yellow. Prominent petrol. Dry, powerful stone fruit, stone, and outstanding drive and length.
White
2010 Domaine Ostertag Riesling Muenchberg France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru
Deep yellow. Some petrol, black tea, and peach on the nose. Medium weight. Slightly loose, glycerine feel, just off dry, plenty of soil, ripe melon, and rising citrus on the finish. Mature, very interesting mix of flavors.
White
2011 Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Rangen de Thann Clos St. Urbain France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru
Medium yellow. Lush entry, off dry. Exotic tropical and yellow orchard fruit, resoundingly acidic, stony finish. This is not fully integrated-maybe another 5 years?
White
2001 Freiherr Langwerth von Simmern Erbacher Marcobrunn Riesling Kabinett Germany, Rheingau
Light golden. Nice medium to lighter bodied wine atop a stone foundation. Mature, secondary mixed fruit, moderate sweetness and richness, long soil finish. Very good but not particularly distinguished.
White - Off-dry
1992 Paul Anheuser Schloßböckelheimer Königsfels Riesling Auslese halbtrocken Germany, Nahe
flawed
Medium yellow. Middleweight, quite glycerine, simple sweet fruit, some soil. Marred by estery, chemical notes and a harsh, short finish. Poor.
White - Off-dry
2005 Willi Schaefer Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
I did not note the fuder number. Complex aromatic mixture of spice, herbs, and bright fruit. Light, lively, and shimmering on the palate. Only moderate sweetness, apple jelly and a strong slate imprint. Delicious, pure, and so focused. One of my favorites today.

White - Off-dry
2003 Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben Erdener Treppchen Riesling Auslese ** Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Full yellow. Light to medium weight. Spice and white flowers. Expressive citrus, apple, and vanilla bean, moderate residual sugar. Impressively vibrant and delicate for a 2003.
White - Off-dry
1997 Egon Müller/Le Gallais Wiltinger Braune Kupp Riesling Auslese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Full yellow. Deep, honeyed, unctuous stone fruit and spice. Almost BA style. Still primary and unevolved. Tremendous length. Incredible potential even though it already 27 years old.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1967 Joh. Jos. Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Beerenauslese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Golden orange color. Honeyed nose with an off, dirty note. Cleaner in the mouth. Medium weight, not that sweet or lush. That may actually be less sweet than the Le Gallais Auslese. Guava, apple, herbs, slate, and very prominent tart acidity. Not a perfect bottle, but very much alive, interesting, and old school.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1999 Weingut Robert Weil Kiedricher Gräfenberg Riesling Beerenauslese Germany, Rheingau
Light golden. Subtle, rich spiced peach and a bit of corn kernel. Great texture, feel, and length. Some exoticism yet restrained. Lively and beautifully balanced. Great dessert wine.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2017 Framingham Riesling Beerenauslese F-Series New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough
Medium yellow. Pineapple, honeysuckle, and grapefruit at the end. Simple and the sweetness sticks out.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1975 Dr. Dahlem Erben Oppenheimer Herrengarten Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese Germany, Rheinhessen
flawed
Deep amber. Maderized, very sweet burnt caramel, prune, citrus, and light soil. Short, bitter, nutty finish. Well past its time, but it still has some interesting components.
