Introduction

I was in town for the UGC tasting, so that gave me the opportunity to meet up with some friends and dig into a whole bunch of great wine!

Flight 1 (8 notes)

White - Sparkling
1998 Piper-Heidsieck Champagne Cuvée Rare France, Champagne
94 points
This was from magnum and was firing from the get-go with deep tones of freshly baked bread, golden grahams, nougat, brioche, nectarines, red apples, nougat, spiced pears, vanilla bean, and yellow flowers. The Medium bodied feel is rich, deep, and balanced with crisp, high acidity. The feel is gorgeous and flowing with a lot of texture that leads into a lengthy finish. This is a real beauty and shows off the joy that is a Rare with age.

This is such a contrast to the 98. Where the 98 showed off a more rounded and mature quality, this is fresher and more immediate with polished and deep tones of lemon peels, birthday cake notes, biscuits, key limes, bakery fresh notes, toast, and creamed peaches. The Medium bodied feel shows off the depth and liveliness of the nose with crisp, high acidity. This is just lovely. It is certainly young and with a long life ahead of it, but it is also a real joy right now and it is firing extremely well even now.

2016 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Les Forêts France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

This was open and giving right out of the gate as it filled the glass with deep tones of wax, lanolin, gun flint, warm dough, meyer lemons, red apples, crushed rocks, vanilla beans, and yellow flowers. The fruit certainly has some primary qualities to it, but it shows off excellent balance and a round quality to the tones. The Medium bodied feel is textured and balanced with crisp, medium+ acidity that shows off a lot of persistence. The feel is pure class and really makes the wine into a textural experience. This is right at the beginning of its window, but there is plenty of ways to go. I'm not sure this has the stuffing to be a legendary or extremely long-term Raveneau, but it sure is pretty darned good right now!

2021 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis 1er Cru La Forest France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
94 points
The nose is pristine, fresh, and deep with lovely tones of gun flint, lemon curd, sea breeze, pears, green apples, white peaches, saline, white fruits, vanilla beans, and baking spices. The nose leans into the upper register and with a bit of nuance. The Medium bodied feel shows off the freshness, depth, and nuance of the nose along with tart, medium+ acidity and a finish that doesn't quit. There is a ton to like here right now and it is a real delight across the nose and palate in its youth. That said, this will absolutely develop with more years and with some real upside.

The nose is deep and flowing with gorgeous tones of red apples, quince, nectarines, pears, biscuits, bakers' vanilla, warm dough, toast, and yellow flowers. The Medium bodied feel shows off a lot of depth and refined texture along with crisp, high acidity. The finish really doesn't quit and this is a real delight across the palate. This is evolving beautifully and is showing so well right now. There is plenty of life ahead of it and it will be extremely fun following along as it ages.

2002 Louis Roederer Champagne Cristal Brut France, Champagne

This had been open for nearly an hour before I got to it. This is in a glorious place as it shows off classy and deep tones of vanilla beans, red and baked apples, custard, meyer lemons, brioche, pears, ginger, warm bread, and a touch of toasty notes. The Medium bodied feel is pure class and refinement with integrated, high acidity. This is in a beautiful groove right now and is such a treat. It's been a while since I've had this and I'm glad that I've had the chance to re-visit it.

2008 Agrapart Champagne Grand Cru Minéral Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

This is lovely, balanced, and poised with rounded tones of red apples, minerals, spiced pears, yellow florals, quince, baking spices, vanilla, and some dough notes. There is good depth with a refined sense to the nose as well. The Medium bodied feel is deft and balanced with crisp, high acidity. The acidity is showing off excellent integration right now as it is there but more in a supporting role. This feels like it is right in its zone. There is still good freshness to the citrus tones, though they are much more rounded and more in the yellow spectrum.

And this is how we're finishing the night! I don't come across these all too often, so it's a fun treat to have something a bit out of my normal wheelhouse. There is a bit of reduction to the nose at first that gives way into captivating tones of orange peels, nectarines, some match stick, anise seed, licorice, spiced pears, red apples, dough, and a touch of rancio. The Medium bodied feel is robust, yet intriguing with tart and mouthwatering, medium+ acidity that has some sting to it. This likely could use some age, but I also won't be anyone who attempts to give a timeline on it. What I can say is that this is excellent and very Jura.
