Introduction

Was lucky enought to have some very generous guests to share their wine with me throughout the night.

Flight 1 (5 notes)

White
2004 Joseph Drouhin / Drouhin-Vaudon Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
92 points
Fantastic Chablis. I think I tasted this at a pre-buy, but can't recall. Anyway. Gorgeous aromatics of crushed rocks, slightly floral, minerals, steel, and green apple with citrus zest. The palate is full of piercing acidity and freshness. Mostly citrus with minerals, and towards the finish is a streak of underlying richness and creaminess. I think over time this will flesh out and become a classic Chablis. Good juice.
White
1994 Joseph Drouhin Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
flawed
I'll go ahead and assume this is past prime. It wasn't as noticeable at first, but over a little time the oxidized/maderized nose came forward. Lots of nutty qualities on nose and palate. I found this rather odd, particularly due to the fact that a year ago I had an '88 that was absolutely gorgeous? Maybe in 5 years this one will come back around? WHo knows.
Red
1998 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
92 points
Have had this several times over the last year and it is starting to show its best now. The earthy component is still intertwined with dried cherries, warm baking spices, and truffle. The acidity is starting to wind down as well, making for an overall well balanced wine. Although I'm sure it has many years to come, it is well worth opening now.
Red
2005 Quintessa USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford
87 points
Stylistically this has gone down hill in the past few vintages. This is extremely youthful so it's fair to give 87-90. The tannins are bitter with an herbal note, dominating the underlying black fruits, asphalt, and cedar. The nose does employ a nice richness of smoked herbs and bold black fruits. I think this one will come around in the long run, just give a few years.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1999 Château d'Yquem France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
91 points
The nose was my favorite part. Clover honey studded with cinnamon and ginger, apricot preserves with orange peel, and slightly floral. The palate is rich and sweet, but with the perfect balance of acidity. Somewhat spicy, not alcoholic, but spicy with rich stone fruit. First Yquem. Not bad at all.
