Introduction

Brilliant, and really fun evening - an amazing lineup even if perhaps more showed 'under' what was expected than 'over'?

Flight 1 (10 notes)

Red
2010 Giacomo Brezza e Figli Barolo Sarmassa Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
89 points
Dark ruby. Very generous on the nose, and relatively black fruited/darker in comparison with others. Grainy tannins and pretty round. Bit of tar on the palate but also some tart blackcurrant. Pretty concentrated and obviously bags of life left, but for me just a little bit boring? Little bit middle of the road, in this company at least. 89+
Red
2010 Marcarini Barolo Brunate Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
90 points
Ruby, ever so slightly tending towards garnet. Really cool, red fruited nose. Some sweetness; almost a little confected. Palate much less generous, and still massively tannic. NYR, for me. But super textbook. 90++
Red
2010 Poderi Colla Barolo Dardi Le Rose Bussia Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
93 points
Mid Ruby. Entirely red fruited (underripe strawberries for me) on the nose; sweet but not confected. Some florality, cinnamon. Tannins obviously significant but feel well integrated. Palate is a bit more restrained,; feels as though there’s more to come. This is lovely; nose particularly so. 93+
Red
2010 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Villero Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
92 points
Much sweeter on the nose than the 2010 Poderi Colla Barolo Dardi Le Rose Bussia tasted alongside. Really emphatic and sweet - dare I say opulent! Palate tends towards the more tarry, herbaceous side; fruit on the cooked spectrum. Little bit hot. I liked this a lot less than some others.
Red
2010 Pio Cesare Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
93 points
Darker nose than others… cassis?! Very sweet, pretty opulent. Super pronounced nose. Very generous… but not exactly textbook barolo - slightly on steroids! Really fun (and tasty) regardless of any atypicality.

Red
2010 Comm. G.B. Burlotto Barolo Acclivi Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
92 points
Ruby. Such a pronounced, vibrant red-fruited nose. Sweetly spiced. Tannins astonishingly well rounded as is the wine as a whole; difficult to grab hold of or isolate any particular element! Really a pretty unique experience for me. Deteriorated somewhat in the glass; the ‘gloss’ wore away and it tasted harsher and harsher. No idea why; I initially gave it a 95.
Red
2010 Giacomo Fenocchio Barolo Bussia Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
90 points
Ruby. Pretty fruit forward. On the stewed fruit spectrum? Sweet, pretty generous nose, but quite hot on the palate. Bit disappointing for me; bit bruising. Benefit of the doubt - NYR? 90
Red
2010 Silvano Bolmida Barolo Bussia Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
91 points
Evolved ruby. Nose really lifted. Very ‘middle of the road’, at least in this esteemed company. But still quintessential/typical barolo. Super strong core of tannins. Balanced. This is great for the price.
Red
2010 Comm. G.B. Burlotto Barolo Monvigliero Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
92 points
Dark ruby. Pronounced nose; sweetly spiced… star anise? Blue cheese?! Real depth beyond pure red fruit. Tiny bit warm; tannins still v serious; only likely to get better. Other end of the table thought that there was something slightly wrong with this - as it's my first bottle of Burlotto Monvigliero I have no idea! 92++

Red
2010 Massolino Barolo Margheria Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
90 points
Dark ruby. Pretty dark fruited. Super youthful palate; coarse, burley tannins. Some black fruit and stewed red fruits. Feels nowhere near ready; all potential and not much pleasure at this stage. 90++
