K&L Grand Bordeaux Tasting

Flight 1 - Bordeaux (7 notes)

2020 Château Canon France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
I got blackberry aromas and hint of spice on the nose. Very silky texturally with a lightness and nimbleness on the palate. There's blue and purple fruit seasoned with saline and smoky notes. The structure is a little hard to get a read on: decent acidity, firm, slightly drying tannins, with a hit of peppery spice on the finish (not sure if that's from the dry extract of the fruit or from the oak). This is very good -- perhaps "modern" and a little worked, but a new modernism I can stand by.

There's cassis and pure dark fruit on the nose; much tamer than the intoxicating aromas from '20 Canon I had before this. Medium bodied with a velvety texture. There isn't over-the-top, jammy fruit, but I would characterize this wine as ripe and predominantly fruit-forward with just a subtle touch of mineral complexity.

This has a firmer structurer and more acidity than the '20 Rauzan-Segla I had before this. Less fruit-forward dark fruit and the tannins are more austere and drying. However, there is still that off-putting velvety texture, although it's lets unctuous than the comparatively fat '20.

This feels a little closed on the nose, though I smell a focused beam of cassis coming through. Lighter body and weight on the palate than the '19 and '20 Rauzan Segla, though its still relatively fruit forward and velvety texturally. Firm, drying tannins with a long finish with a hint of spice. While this is ripe, it feels a little more tolerable than the very ripe Rauzan Segla wines.

Getting lush, cassis aromas on the nose. Texturally this feels very silky with ripe, melty tannins. Palate is dark-fruited, but it is not over-the-top and there is some restraint. This is very tasty and elegant, and lacks the velvety plushness I get from a lot of '20 Bordeaux.

This wine feels a little heavy-handed with its lush, intense fruity palate. I wish more was going on here besides that big fruit (though I would not characterize it as jammy). It's a little boring for me.

The nose on this wine is explosive and leaps out of the glass: graphite, cedar, mint, and cassis. A kaleidiscope of aromas. The palate is delicate, elegant and silky, hovering over the palate with notes of smoke and spice informing the restrained blue and purple fruit.

We had this blind, but I notice Mouton has this polished, almost glassy texture that seems to be a house signature; at the very least, I was able to identify it. Really loved this, even if it may be a slightly modern take on Bordeaux from what's considered a "meh" vintage.
