Reconsidering Merlot, a Barolo and a Mystery White

Il Corso, NYC

Tasted September 2, 2008 by Cheryl with 877 views

Introduction

A group of us gathered at Il Corso to share an evening of merlot. We had a bunch of dumb luck with four of 13 bottles being corked. I enjoyed the evening. I haven't had a glass of merlot in years and found the 2003 Pride Mountain Top Vintner's Blend, typified merlot to me. I loved it. Il Corso was a tasty place to hold this dinner as well.

Flight 1 (11 notes)

We started off with mystery white from Rob. A number of us know of his interest in Scholium and between that and the dark golden color in the decanter, got stuck with guesses in that neck of the woods, but we were wrong. This was a white merlot from France(?). He said he'd give a car to the person who could guess the wine correctly - I think there was little risk to his checkbook! Good fun.

This seemed corked out of the bottle, blew off some and I got some sweetness on the finish and then the cork came back.

Fantastic. My wine of the night. Bright finish, fruity but with some depth, not heavy on the oak. Balanced. Lovely. For me, the best of CA merlot. The group's number three of the night.

Lenny served this to us blind. I liked it quite a lot. This was balanced, not a huge wine. My 2nd wine of the night.

Served blind. Corked.

1998 Château Monbousquet France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Served blind. There was some fruit here and less earth than I expected. This was a bit hollow on the midpalate. Not for me.

2000 Château La Gomerie France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion
Short finish. This was the group's WOTN. I was the lone soldier on this, I think.
