Boating party with the monthly group

One Degree Fifteen, Sentosa

Tasted January 4, 2009 by Paul S with 350 views

Introduction

This was our third monthly dinner. Sean's turn to organise, and did he set the bar high - we took a boat out from One Degree Fifteen on a beautiful day, and started with a rose as the sun was setting and anchored off Lazarus Island for dinner. Wines were provided by Allen and I. A super-fun evening with a few excellent wines. No reds - only roses, champers and a Riesling. Very suitable on a balmy but breezy Sunday evening out at sea.

Flight 1 (4 notes)

Rosé
2008 Tokara Mourvèdre Zondernaam Rosé South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch

An unusually deep red for a rose. Simple, but absolutely delicious - Nose opened with a dash of herbs, almost savoury in character, then lots of strawberries. Very pretty on the palate, sweet, yet not overly so, with fresh sour cherry-ish acid wed to slightly candied raspberry flavours and a touch of bramble. Not much finish to speak of, but great finish throughout. Thoroughly enjoyable, and great for a boating party.
Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Laurent-Perrier Champagne Cuvée Rosé Brut France, Champagne

Medium-sized bead, but rather frothy, salmon pink in colour. Nose opened with yeast and bread dominant and just the slightest bit of cherry marking it as a rose rather than a normal Brut. Palate was very dry, with ripe apple and fresh strawberry tones along with a nice seam of mineral especially when the wine moved into the decent finish. I thought it was a bit straightforward at first, although very nicely integrated, but the wine showed promises of underlying complexity as it took on some air. This is one NV that could do with a little bottle age. Good - but nowhere near the phenomenal Billecart-Salmon Rose.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Laurent-Perrier Champagne Grand Siècle Brut France, Champagne

Served from a big black magnum with obviously some bottle-age to it. This was an entirely excellent and very, very yummy NV. Life-long Krug fan that I am, this was certainly better than the last bottle of Krug Grande Cuvee that we had. Nice, fine, persistent bead. Nose was all biscuit, toasty brioche and caramel overlaying apple fruit. Super fresh acid on the creamily textured palate, with great balance throughout and integrated flavours of green apple, bread, yeast and more brioche notes in the savoury umami finish. Complex, superbly woven together, delicious and all round excellent.
White
2007 Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Leistenberg Riesling Kabinett Germany, Nahe
93 points
Incredibly good and ridiculously good value - probably the best 2007 Kabinett that I have tried to date from anywhere in Germany. Sweet nose, full of white musk, rose and geranium. Almost like walking through a garden or orchard. Full of rich white fruit on the palate - apples and pears, lifted by citrus lemon tones. Fantastic balance. Nice bit of chalky mineral wound through the wine, with Mosel-like bittersweet slate tones coming through on the long and sappy finish.
